When I was at a meet at the 'OK' Diner where I usually go but this was a mustang meet. An American who had fitted a chevy v8 and automatic into what was previously a V6 manual.
The thing is he insisted it was a 5 speed as it was three normal then overdrive and lockup!
Now here is the question is he right or wrong? If he is right then I could say the same with the neon as it is 3 speed with overdrive and lock up. But when you consider that in the destruction manual it says 4 speed, how could he get away with saying that?

Easy way to tell, how many gear changes do you feel when you take it to motorway speeds?

Well that's the thing with many american slush transmission; you don't feel a single damn shift MB at least sold they'r 5-spds. as 5-spds. Though they were just the old 4-spds with an electronically switched overdrive... So I think it sort of is "legal" to call it that. In my own tiny special world the difference would be if it (the OD) is manually switchable, or if it is switched automatically in series to the other gears. Which it is in case of the MB gearbox (722.5XX)...

The 5 speed auto in my Range Rover has been called a variety of names I could not print here at various times during my ownership. It must be the worst auto GM ever built.

Lockup is not a speed, any more than clutch slip in a manual transmission is an additional speed!

How many difference gear ratios are there? That's the answer to how many gears there are available for selection. If 3rd overdrive and 4th are the same ratio, then you've got two methods of selecting that ratio with the same end result.

AFAIK 3 speed with O/D and lock up is a 4 speed, overdrive just meens it has a 4th gear that is more than the usuall one to one ratio and lock up just meens the T/C is mechanicly locked when it is in overdrive (no T/C slip = more efficient drive to the box and less engine power lost) as with the ford 4ALD auto box. Overdrive in a manual box is usually selectable in 3rd and 4th giving 6 speeds (think of it as sperate gearbox between the box and diff) not the same thing in an suto. Unless he actually has a 5 speed auto in there calling lockup an extra gear is wronge IMHO.
