Cheers for the comments about the wheels guys. I'm definitely going with plan B as like some noticed the dish is appealing. Anyway, the Cav is off the road for the Winter which gives me time to sort out some really annoying little jobs that I've wanted to do. They are; Heater blower not working Alternator not working Some Instrument lights not working Instrument cluster heavily covered in dust and dead bugs Door check straps inop Oil leak from mechanical fuel lift pump First of all I started on the removal of the alternator. It hadn't bothered me over the Summer as I was only using it during the day and I always put the battery on charge in the garage. So I whipped off the unit. I'm so glad I took it off, when I spun the pulley there is a horrible knocking from it, I bet the engine will be so much quieter when replacement refitted. Not sure whether to get repaired or replaced. I guess I might not have the choice with it being so old. I also need a new V belt as the old one has hardened and become brittle. I'll update on wether I successfully locate an alternator soon. Next job was to tackle the heater blower. I first of all suspected the motor was probably at fault so I removed it from the housing. When I tested the motor with my power probe I found that it worked on both speeds. Hmmm so back to basics then. Next I probed the feed connector. Bingo! Problem located as it was only feeding the motor 5V. First of all I thought it was cruddy terminals as you can see. However, when I probed the wires through the insulation before the connector I was still getting 5V. Time to trace back. I removed the switch, tested it and soon realised that it was an earth switch and working perfectly. No fault there. So then my attention was turned to power feed. Check the trusty Haynes manual diagram and found that the torpedo fuses were all totally corroded and crusty! So on removal of all the fuses and a good clean of the terminals, I fired up the motor and hey presto! It was happily blowing a gale out of the vents, including some dust and very old parking tickets! Next was the instrument cluster as there was a dead bug squashed between the plastic and the temperature gauge which had been bothering me for ages. Plus there were a few bulbs that weren't working in the cluster. Cluster all exposed, I just need a soft brush now to dust them down. I also found two bulbs that needed replacing. The Ign (battery) light bulb and the Hazard warning flasher. I finally got rid of the dead insects with a good sharp gust of breath. From this photo you can see just how much dust had accumulated behind the lens. The outer cluster and lens needs a very good cleaning. I also took the clock out as it doesn't seem to illuminate, however I'm pretty sure it should do so I removed it for closer inspection. Perhaps fellow Cavalier owners can confirm my thoughts? I also want a period head unit to put in the gap too. I don't really care if it works either. If anyone has one feel free to let me know. Finally I was looking around the rest of the interior as it needs a bit of a refurbish. I found this behind the passenger sun visor. It did make me chuckle. Obviously it was a long time ago, I don't think that's the politically correct term these days. Anyway, thanks for looking and as always, all comments welcome.

Ok, Another little update time. I absolutely love the original protruding number plates on the car and originally the plan was to restore them. But then I decided they should be left alone as they weathered through years of abuse. They're no doubt the originals. How many modern cars today can you say today only wear their original plates through their existence. However I did decide that the mounting bracket should be replaced! Having removed the front plate, you can see the nasty little oil leak leaving patches on my garage floor that I've been needing to fix. I've always suspected that it was coming from the mechanical fuel lift pump at the bottom of the engine. So the next job was to tackle the leak. Since the alternator is still off the car, this makes the job a lot more easier to carry out. So off came the fuel pump, it's very grotty and needs a damn good clean up. However it is working a treat. I think the gasket was about had it. It's about 2-3mm thick and feels like it's made of fibre. Haynes manual refers to an asbestos insulator. However it crumbled during removal and I'm going to need to find another some where. I cleaned up the gasket face ready for refitting the pump once I've located my new gasket and cleaned the fuel pump. Cheers for looking and all comments and advice greatly appreciated.

Hi. Looks like normal thick gasket paper or even dare I suggest cereal box would sort that. If not hylomar. The picture is deceiving, it's approx 2-3mm thick. I've got some gasket paper but I'm thinking of having an ally piece machined then gasket paper either side.

The pump gasket was the cause of the front oil leak on my MK1 Cavalier, you are better buying a proper gasket which is available with the 'bottom' gasket set. It's good to follow the progress of a fellow MK1 owner, looks a lovely car too.

Is the short block gasket set still available then? Also does your clock illuminate? Cheers in advance.

You can still buy the 'block set' ok. mine is a basic L so it has no clock. I'd reckon though that it should light up. Try these guys, they have an Ebay shop and they supplied my yellow plastic speedo drive and rear gearbox oil seal(this was proving very hard to source beforehand) Yeah, it's in German but you'll get the idea from the photos plus Mantas and Asconas are identical to the MK1 Cavalier stores.ebay.co.uk/edelschmiede/_i.html?rt=nc&_sid=17307574&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1513&_pgn=1

I could be wrong, but your alternator problem might only be because the ignition battery light was duff.

I could be wrong, but your alternator problem might only be because the ignition battery light was duff. I know what you're saying but there is something seriously wrong inside. The bearing must be toast as when you spin the pulley it rattles. It's update time again. On closer inspection of the pump itself it was apparent that it was letting oil passed the pump plunger. It was then leaking out of the housing drain holes. So it was no fuel pump time. Managed to find a NOS Quinton Hazell pump on EBay. I didn't need to worry apparently, it appears this pump fits pretty much every Vauxhall engine. So in my last update you may remember me mention the fuel pump gasket spacer. I couldn't find one at all anywhere. (Even after looking at Cavboys German EBay shop) So I spoke to my friend and he knocked up an aluminium spacer. Exact specifications copied. It was 3mm thick in the end. In with the new pump were two new paper gaskets so this spacer must need to be fitted. Here it is all in situ ready to go back on the engine. Thanks for looking, more updates to follow.

Ok so last update I showed you my new fuel pump and insulator plate. So first job was to fit it all back to the car. Nice and simple job. The new ally plate worked a treat. Here you can see the ally plate and the two gaskets in situ. However this left me with a bit of a dilemma. As now I have a nice looking new fuel pump. I didn't want to refit the worn out looking old flexi fuel hose. So I invested in some braided 8mm fuel line and some nice hose end finishers. I think they look really neat. I don't like the finishers that are pretending to be threaded fittings. So I made up my two fuel lines ready to go on the car. Then it was just a matter of putting it all together. Here is the end result. I'm quite pleased with it actually. As usual folks. Thanks for looking and taking the time to read.

Hi there,
I think you will find that the blown ignition bulb was causing your lack of charging. The feed through the bulb goes to the alternator and supplies the feed to excite the alternator. It may be that all the alternator needs is a clean up and new bearings.
Cheers - mike

Problem I'm having is I have no idea of anywhere local to me that will supply parts to rebuild my alternator. Any knowledge?

Lovely car, had a good look over it at Billing this year. Thanks buddy. Ok another update, two in one day. This thing with the Alternator was bugging me. I managed to find a new replacement for £75. However, if there's nothing wrong with mine and it was just that 12v5w cap less bulb then it's a waste. So I decided to strip it down and see. It's a Delco Remy. It came apart really nicely. So I now have a fully stripped alternator. Here is the two halves of the housing with the rotor. These have the two bearings in that need removing and replacing. The pulley and fan will be getting the aesthetic treatment. The armature (or stator) looked in good working order. No visible damage as such. The bridge rectifier attached also appeared to be ok with no visible damage. Then finally the brush pack. They look pretty good condition and barely worn at all. So all in all the plan is probably going to be to get some new bearings. Press them in place. Then clean up and paint the housing and pulley before refitting. Hopefully it will all be in good working order.

When you took the speedo surround out did you take a picture of the heater controls? Mine is giving me a right head-scratch, the hot and cold lever won't hold the cable, there's a hole for the cable end to locate in but i'm puzzled as to how it holds in there whilst you operate the lever. I can't see any trace of a clip having been there and i've never took it apart, i'm stumped !!! The heater controls as you can see the cable has been bent up by the lever, but why did it come adrift?
