Hi! Plase explain to me some methods of giving plain metal a fast coat of as natural looking rust as possible. Short explanation; I need to make a new pump-lever for one of my hydraulic jacks. And new plain steel would look sort of out of place. So I'm looking into getting them to look as old as possible in a bit less time than 40-50 years I'm looking for that smooth-brown-rusty look of old tools. Like the top section of the current (wrong) pump lever: Thanks a bunch for any suggestions! I hope you all agree that ión this a like-new pump lever would be totaly out of place I'm usually against fake-patina - not this time. This beast is probabl morethan 50 years old Cheers, Jan

I "pickled" some tools with slight surface rust in corners in ordinary cheap vinegar. They were then removed and left - intention was to paint but "forgot". I noticed the other day they have now got a rust film all over - ever areas that weren't before ! So what about soaking in vinegar and then left outside on damp day ? You could wrap handle in old towel and saturate that with vinegar.

Re: instructables; yes, that's the first google result. But in the comments someone says it just wipes off. So it's just superficial. Paul H: I guess that's the only way to go. Will take a bit of time, though. So be it.

Hi, Thinking about Pauls method, I think it was having the surface virgin again with no oils that left it exposed. I then thought why not try the electrolysis method but connect it up the wrong way so it gains the rust? The smooth rust comes from handling, So once rust is established on the handle. What about using some compound to buff it? It shouldn't be aggressive enough to remove it, so should work.

Colin I suppose somebody who uses electrolysis (I do - but not for a while !) could tell us what the sacrificial metal looks like after a "session" to see if that would work. It's huuge - what appears to be pretty low is actually 17-18cm It's a gearbox lift to be used under a jacked up car. And 1.3m long I've given the punmp rod a good degrease, brushed it with vinegar and rinsed it with water - it's showing first signs of rust allready. I'll just leave it outside. Too bad we've not had a single drop of rain for 1,5 weeks now But it's starting to get rusty. For 12 years now I've been battling rust - and now I need to do the opposite. And I suck at it Cheers, Jan

I'd have thought a dose of salt solution would have the desired effect. It certainly works on my boat trailers.

Yeah I've actually rinsed it with a mixture of salt water & vinegar. But maybe it was just too hot and the water just vapourized. I'm trying salt water again. Funny - a bit of rain and all my tools rust like hell. But if I actually WANT something to rust - it doesn't

If your ok with nasty acid and stuff like that have a watch of this yanky chap May be a bit extreme Ive always found items with a 'Vauxhall' badge rust pretty sharpish, So try putting Vauxhall down the steel, rust kinda attracts to those letters

How about making up a salt-water solution, and spraying that on, after "keying" in the surface?

Could you not find a piece of old steel in a scrap yard / recycling centre or the scrap bin at an engineering shop?

I would still have had to weld & grind it - so could start just as well with a new piece. In the end this will look more uniform

So this is the result of warm salt water with a shot of vinegar essence. applied with a spray bottle Where it's not rusted I didn't get the zinc off completely (the bottom end is old, 4mm wall zinced water pipe). Fits into the patina I think.

I want to know what explanation youre going to give to your wife when she notices you stood in the garden masturbating a metal pole to get the shine back.

No wife - all the pipe polishing in the garden I want Ah the single life, freedom to polish pipes, handle oily shafts, fettle with flanges and tickle the odd gusset. If you're really lucky you might even get to do the odd full penetration butt weld... Oh, and there's always the option of a wankel, you know, if it's been a while.
