Looking at the prices rising similarly to the S2 RS Turbo, it looks like another teen favourite car I've missed the boat on.
So to combat this, how easy, cheap would it be to put GT Turbo running gear in a base model 5? What are parts prices like?
Cheers. Stu

With a full donee car its easy really but wouldn't suggest just buying the basics and doing it mate as all the niggly bits will be a nightmare to source seperately

I think originality pays here too. Not much point sexing up a base model as even if identical and perfect it will always be less than an original turbo.
Dare I say it, the R5t was never much of a good car when it was current. It was the sort of car which was always broken and sometimes in a very expensive way. I know that's not the fashionable thing to say to fans of particular models but if you've not bought one yet then I suppose it's a discussion worth having.
The difference is something which was designed to be fast from the ground up will be far more rewarding. The German cars have always been pretty good, likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes if you wanted to go fast for reasonable money. I love my old Saab turbos but I realise they're only worth having if you buy a really expensive one or if you know how to look after them.
There's a guy on here who spends a lot of time fitting later BMW running gear to E21 BMWs. I have a lot of time for that. Would love to do one of those conversion myself at some point.

Not sure why it would be particularly difficult?
From experience its quite simple to dump a Saxo VTS/VTR or 106 GTI engine into an AX. I imagine the Renault 5 would be similar, I would agree that a Clio engine would make more sense though.

If you are going to transplant all the running gear then just remove the front subframe with engine and box and bolt it into new shell

The expense of the conversion will exceed the price of buying a decent R5GTT.
If I was you I'd be on a 205 GTI before they get silly as there getting there now, below average ones are fetching £1500 while nice ones are fetching over £3k its not that long ago the R5 was the same, mind I can remember Escort RS turbo's being the same money.
Mind the price of a good VTS which will keep pace with the R5 and arguably has a better chassis than the 5 and more forgiving than the 205. Plus it won't be long until they start to go up in value to. I had a Saxo VTS it was a right laugh, but I still have my 205 and its going no where in a hurry.
