I love this site, only found out about it a couple of months ago while looking for interesting pics of cars. There is so much knowledge and love for all sorts of cars and nothing is excluded (unless it's too new obviously).
I am in constant awe of some of the mods done, the unique ways in which people change their cars, and how positive the reaction is to every one.
However there is people like me who don't have a retro car yet! Sometimes I can't bear to look at a thread because I know I'll love the car but it'll get me thinking about buying one which realistically can't happen yet. I am very blessed in that I get a free brand new car from my work - but this is a curse and a blessing. It would mean I wouldn't have to rely on a old car as my only transport so makes a retro a possibility but on the other hand it means I don't have much space!
So, fellow sufferers, let's share with the group:
1) first name only - we are all friends here 2) what car would you (realistically) like to buy as your first retro? (The one you have the big eBay search on constantly!) 3) why haven't you taken the plunge yet?
Me:
1) Rob - Hi! 2) Volvo 740/940 3) can't afford the insurance and too scared of what happens if I get a rough one or something big goes/it's needs loads of welding.

Rob, you should just do it! I still own my 940 2.3s LPT, and can attest that 740s/940s are tough old boats, even rough ones will keep plodding on. There are no REALLY expensive parts that go pop (though I popped 3rd gear on my supposedly unburstable M90 gearbox but I was running heavily tweaked boost with a heavy right foot, very little by the way of mechanical sympathy and was constantly sideways/leaving massive black lines everywhere!) They're pretty resilient rust-wise, can be made quick if you get an LPT and wind the boost up (and other associated mods) and most will fall under classic insurance which is buttons compared to new stuff! The only question is how much power you want to wring out of it (as boost can get addictive and expensive) and if you can afford the fuel, as they get thirsty on said boost.
Get one bought, they will never be cheaper and infact seem to be on rise again.

What I love about this forum is, besides being friendly, the cars discussed are mainly those from when I was younger. So to me, born in 1957, what people call "retro" or "classic" I remember being brand new So whilst now my 2 everyday cars aren't retro (I've also got 1985 Marlin Roadster based on 1974 Marina 1800TC and 1993 Mahindra MM540 as well) that doesn't matter - it's the forum content that I find so great. To answer your original questions...
1) Tom 2) Way too late for my first retro, but currently lusting after a 2 door E-30 built into a versatile motorsports weapon that can do a bit of everything. 3) Because of my comically bad personal circumstances. Self employed photographer that just lost my full time job and currently 'between addresses'. Thankfully, I swapped a Cosworth powered Capri for a VW T5 when I had the chance, because when everything goes tits up I can just about live in the van. Wouldn't fancy it in the Capri.
Still go to car shows. Still buy too many magazines. Still spend too long on Ebay.
Get yourself a Volvo if that's what you really want, you might be dead next year. In the meantime, you could be going sideways in a gigantic land-barge. Yes things will go wrong, but a few years down the line you only remember the fun stuff.

I'm Rob I've just joined and would love a retro ride. In fact a would love a big show room full of retro cars! I go through different stages of wanting a classic form the 60's/70's then sometimes i want a hot hatch from the 80's. I would also like a retro van to convert into a camper. However at the minute i'm really liking the 70's Japanese sports cars like the toyota Celica, corolla coupe and skyline amounts others. What i look for on ebay.
volvo p1800 vw type 3 fastback (pre facelift) Vauxhall viva coupe Opel Manta A Toyota Celica mk1 ta22 Skyline Or any other J coupe
80's renault 5 gtt 205 gti 1.9 Honda crx vtec audi 80 coupe mr2 mk1

This thread doesnt work, as your Volvo 740 is definitely retro. it was designed in the 80s, its got no curves, and it has yellow indicator lenses, all of which point towards a retro car.

Paul H This is pretty much the same as me............Except I'm not quite that old. lol I'd love to have a real old Retro car but at the moment it's not possible. Lack of money, space, etc. I do have a Classic Impreza as an everyday car so I'd have thought that was borderline retro anyway?

1) Joe (durr lol) 2) All the retros! 70 & 80's German, French or J mainly 3) My garage isnt much good & my GTI is kinda to good in so many ways.
The GTI is going next year as we are moving offices so I will no longer have a parking space - so I'm tempted with something more retro with LPG (for free parking) Also now I have the Golf Plus, I don't need 2 sensible cars.... lol.
Also, if I save up, my wife said I can have the garage rebuilt & make it a bit bigger "If it will make you happy & stop you going on about it" as she put it lol.

Hi am Lee and am an alcoholic, oh wait hang on wrong place.
Make that prolific curse word/cheap car buyer if its under priced and catches my attention then there is a good chance that I'd buy it its how I've owned over 50 cars in 12 years.
Some were good, some weren't so good but they all left me with memories.
Anyway
Lee The retro of choice this week MG Maestro with a T16 engine The why not well there all rotten or very expensive.
How ever I do own a 205 gti, 94 V8 Discovery, 99 Discovery, 90 NSR 125 and a modern Toyota for when they all break down.

steve, I'm currently between retros and driving something a little newer (v40 volvo but in my defense it is on coilovers) BUT the draw of driving something designed with a straight edge is strong. My last car was an ee80 corolla. My next car could be anything from the 80's or 90's and hopefully it'll be soon
