Acquired a kawasaki gpz600r that I am most likely going to street fighter as fairings are not good enough to restore. So far weve cleaned carbs as were sticking. Next will be to renew oil, refit fueltank and a battery and get it running.

Do the valve clearances - essential maintenance, especially on old kwaks.
Will make a nice project.

Blimey, been a while since I saw a Motad Nexxus. Are they even still going? I have a lot of affection for early watercooled Geeps, had a few when I was dispatch riding and they may not have lasted very long but at least they were fun till they did blow up. Could look pretty cool streetfightered with that old perimeter steel frame and all

I know absoloutly nothing about the gpz. Only bike ive had is a yamaha sr125. This was a freebie so took a punt.
When you say valve clearances what do you mean?
as for blowing up, is there anything I can check for. Not that the bike will get used

My wife had an SR125 It was actually quite a sweet, fun little thing. The bike, not the waff, she's neither of those . That GPZ will feel like the Starship Enterprise in comparison, lol. AFAIR there's no specific weak link with them, it's just at that time Kawasaki were having a bit of a build quality lull, shall we say? One of mine broke the gearbox, one wore the cam hardening through and mashed its top-end to bits. One dropped the magnets off the generator and spread the fragments through the oil system. But then they weren't given much love and they were ridden hard enough to kill many a hoss. A lot of it was probably as much down to lack of mechanical sympathy and infrequent oil changes on cheap syrup. As mentioned, valve clearances are crucial to getting these stroppy engines to run right, and don't overlook the importance of oil in a bike. It's not like a car; the oil is shared with the clutch and gearbox, and the polymer chains get mashed up and contaminated far quicker than in a car engine. Plus even a lazy bike revs to, like 11k so it needs good lube

Snap The nexus was so quiet it needed sorting, Viper race can internals and a bit of welding

My brother had one back in the day, B reg, it was, same colour as that. They were THE bike that started the whole 600cc thing going, prior to them, it was pretty much all 750's & 650's

Nice score!
I had a 1990 GTR for a while. Massive mistake. Had a crazy big HP motor in a touring frame and body. It was shitful to tour on but god it was quick.
Look around on ebay and in the US/Aus for parts. You might score big and be able to get el cheapo fairings from China/HK or even just fibreglass ones from the states.
My advice would be to get everything mechanical sorted first, then check all the electrical stuff, then do the body work. Sort out the stock bits first, then modify it later.
good luck with it!
