Happy Zombie Jesus day all, I have been offered the below from a friend-of-a-friend who needs to clear his arch (£12k of work blah blah blah). I'm intrigued (barring that rather 'interesting' front bumper extension) but I have no idea what it is - and this is the only pic I have that wasn't taken on a potato. What is it? Why does it have 6 wheels? Do I want it? And why do I think that rocking up to the Gathering in it would be trouser-tentingly awesome?

I'm sure there's people on here who can be more specific but I'm narrowing it down to a Mid 70s F Series Ford pickup. The towing bits make it a useful tool, but less desirable (obviously people will have there own preference, I'm being general) as a cruiser.

It is a tow truck made out of a 70's Ford F250 or F350 Still a very common thing here in the states. Expect the road manners of a combine harvester and single digit fuel economy, whilst being a squeaky, rattling filthy beast of a thing.

Answers: It's a wrecker Because it's a wrecker Yes, because it's a wrecker Yes, because it's a wrecker. I'd rock that. I have a bizarre love for the utilitarian look of wrecker trucks over their pickup counterparts. It's awesome. How much does he want, if you don't mind me asking?

You know a lady never tells...although from the sounds of it if I were to cross his palm with 2k he'd be happy. I know the square root of f-all about these things, but that doesn't sound like much money to me. Usual story - labour of love restoration, lack of space, 000s spent etc. He's a good old boy though, so I do believe it.
Given it's a left hander, on Q plate, and a tow truck I'm sure that affects desirability - I can't see many online but prices seem to vary wildly - less than he's asking, up to 15k.
I just like yellow.

As above really, it's plenty cool, hugely useful and seemingly quite cheap if its as good as it looks.
The extended front bumper is a counterbalance for towing particularly heavy stuff without wheelie-ing every time you set off.

Be wary of registration. It MIGHT be registered as a recovery vehicle or similar so no MOT applicable and restrictions on use. That means no "private" use what so ever unless properly registered. Insurance might also be a problem for a private person with no business use.

Just get it bought, it's *far* too awesome to be wasting time with questions. Figure out the rest of the details later.

I'm curious about this...he does work in the trade, owns several modern flatbeds etc. as per his line of work...

I know you said you liked yellow, but this would be the absolute *perfect* opportunity to make a replica of the F Series tow truck from Mad Max without too much effort: Have you bought it yet?

Ford F250 maybe, most likely its a 350 as its a dually. its a bit early for a diesel (introduced in 83 I think)
I used to cruise around in a 5.2 dodge, so easy to drive and loads of passenger room. then got a Bedford CF spec lift harder work to drive but awesome times.
Really what could be more practical. Can you afford NOT to have it, that is really the question!

Hi, depends what you are going to do with it. As Paul H says you can't drive it privately as it is. If you are going to work it then depending on what the vehicle weights are and how old you are governs what licence you need, or whether a CPC is needed. If you want to drive it privately then remove the crane and tax and MOT it, It has a lot of money spent on it so should MOT easily. Personally I think it's a bit of a white elephant.

it's awesome - Pollitt linked it to me on ebay a while back, iirc it was up for 3.5k ish it's deffo a 70's one, if you look at the bodysides, the moulding is indented - hence 'dentside' (mine is the model before, with sticking out moulding - mine's a 'bumpside' haha) when I saw it I thought it'd probably come off one of the airbases, as most of their stuff seemed to go on Q plates, and I can't see someone privately importing one of those wreckers, though I suppose anything is possible parts are pretty easy to get hold of, I seem to remember from the ad it's a petrol v8 and a 4 speed, but I might be wrong there - and regarding registration etc, if it's got a visible chassis number - check the door as the vin tag is there - then getting it an age related plate shouldn't be too hard, and re the MOT exempt thing, afaik you can just get it inspected and passed as a pickup / recovery - or I'll sell you the hillbilly flatbed off my f250 for it kev
