Hi there, Has anyone ever custom made their own doorpanels? And I mean luxury doorpanels, not of the simple aluminium plating kind, but something resembling a normal car interior. I'm looking for info on materials to use, possibly fibre glass usage and also on sewing tips. I'd like to make something that has stiched lines in it and looks padded. Kinda like the door panels in this car: retrorides.proboards.com/thread/133945/1977-ford-taunus-door-sedan?page=5I'd like to compliment that with some more shape though like more modern cars. Also looking for design input.

Gosh, yes I've done a few now. Material choice is wide open but don't forget you need fire retardent type. As for shapes, I've only felt with foam on hardboard backs cutting the foam to the shapes wanted / recesses and then flying the fabric into the shapes, don't forget you will need a fabric with some give to shape. Final stitching I always overlock, saves any problems. Hope that helps a bit

Some DIY I made for a past MK1 VW project Started with luan plywod cut to shape Stitched up the perforated vinyl onto thin foam to match the pattern of the Porsche seats I was using and glued it down Cut cardboard strips staple strips onto ply sandwiching the vinyls. fold new flap down glue to the backside repeat for the top and wherever else. flip it back over and put the bits on to make it look finished repeat as many times as you have doors

I made these myself as a first try, but I'm not 100% satisfied with them. The glue won't hold in car heat and the recessed stitching is'nt really recessed enough. I also foamed a backing board, then cut recesses where the lower stitching should be glued etc. See the link below. granada-mk1.nl/index.php/granada11/granada-mki-tweede-restauratie/gallery/54I'd like to ask you about one thing in more detail though. My experience with the sewing like you show in your mid section, me using vinyl and soft foam backing, is that I end up wit a piece of cloth with the stitches in, the foam backing attached, but no embossed feel, when layed on the panel it stil is just a flat piece of cloth. So how did you accomplish that there really are high and low sections?
