Remember the old days? When the internet meant you discovered new scenes, styles and shows? These days things are different...Heroes drive Mk1 Escorts and old school Skylines in blockbuster movies, New Zealand and the US (among others!) build J-tin to rival the Japanese, Russians are 'stancing' and Fast Car features 'our' kind of cars. You're just as likely to have an awesome car pop up on your Facebook newsfeed (whilst the show it's in is still in full swing!) as you are to find it on RR. All that has its positives and negatives. Positive? Cool cars appearing everywhere! Negatives? If you've found it...so has everyone else! If we're all looking at the same stuff, trying to be 'authentic' is there a danger that nothing will be special anymore? If we're all building Shakotan Cressidas, Old-School Cal Bugs, Euro-style Polos and Mk1 Escorts with bubble arches who is building the weird stuff for us to find in the future? Or can we just rely on ingenuity, budget constraints, legal issues and the availability of base cars/parts locally to keep things fresh (the reason the UK produced Lowrider Datsuns and P100 minitrucks, Russia has a load of cool Ladas and the French had all the cool graphic paint jobs in the pre-BRM-old-school-cal aircooled days). Bear witness to Retro Havoc 2014, which took place over the weekend in Malaysia...found via Facebook...a bunch of guys who clearly have access to the same internet as us, doing things a bit like us, somewhere else...they're seeing the same things as we are, but things are turning out a bit different. Mk1 Escorts on 2005 UK plates and SSR Mk1s? Thank you internet...I think. www.autofreaks.net/2014/03/retro-havoc-storms-into-malaysia/www.facebook.com/pages/Backwheels-Bitches-BwB/194162664014877www.facebook.com/mohd.shahruzy/media_set?set=a.10202736790317542.1073741837.1133060228&type=1

I remember the old days when you only saw such things of awesome at car shows, and Custom Car mags etc.. and the newly bloodied custom/retro kids in their bubble arched Escorts, Mk3 Cortina's done out in burnt orange with a Rebel flag on the roof, Ala General Lee, jacked up with a fog light illuminating the polished rear axle,Capri's with numerous bits of wacky body kits,I tried to break the mould back in '89, by putting bloody great rear fins on a FD Victor, all was well untill I tried to shut the boot....whoops all very Pre internet. I see where your coming from with the nigh on impossible 'original' - but isnt it just damn good to google 'stanced', 'J cars' 'slammed' etc... and see what is out there. My knowledge of mad and weird has expanded greatly by just coming on this site. There will always be the mad engineer out doing the last mad engineer in Blighty, pretty much because most English guys who are good with spanners are completely bang out bonkers And as for the rest of the world... Lordy give a spanner to a Russian, all hell breaks loose in a very cool way Not sure if any of the above makes sense, just done a 16 hour shift, and I really should be in bed

Great find!
Gahhhh, need closer photos of some of those rotaries! There looks to be an uber-rare Cosmo HB in there, with the apparently de rigeur RX-7 FC hoodscoop. Not many of those beasties left in the world!

Loving this. Mk3 Cortina's done out in burnt orange with a Rebel flag on the roof, Ala General Lee, So, in the past, we used to nick ideas from films and TV but now... These days things are different...Heroes drive Mk1 Escorts and old school Skylines in blockbuster movies ... film and TV nick ideas from us?

I think the more experiences we have, the greater our knowledge and therefore the greater our chance of applying said knowledge in an original and inspired way. Not everybody has the ability to come up with something totally new, the people that do have always been forging their own paths. With the internet at our (and their) disposal, sharing all these wonderful creations across the forums, Facebook, Pinterest etc is truly inspiring for us all I think. Sure, my Micra is a bit formulaic, lowered, alloyed & smoothed a bit, but it is mine. A quick google finds loads like it, but they are spread all over. The chance of bumping into another one on the street is pretty slim. So, I like the internet, the variety, the exposure, the very fact that I can learn more about car styles and even import parts with ease from virtually anywhere. Above all though, I like actually getting my hands dirty and making things happen for real.

Great thread, I was working in Malaysia a couple of years ago and the retro scene over there is amazing. I have a friend who was at Retro Havoc with his twin cam 16v Datsun 510, I've askedd if I can use some of his photos here.

Citroen (tick me off if I'm wrong) clocked this and made the Saxo, the (at the time) top young kids ride, you could swap nigh on everything and make it what ever you wanted it to look like at a decent price, me I was a lowly mid 80's teenager, my first was a FE Victor, didnt even know what it was at the time, but it was the last car in the auction, just passed my test and bidded 30 quid and won my first ride FE 2300 Victor - rotten as a pear, but hell I loved it

This is Halim and his 510, I've seen this car in the flesh and it is pretty amazing I think I remember you posting this up before. Does it have holes in the roof and a crazy horn?

I went to the first Brands Hatch Summer Wednesdays meet of the year last night in the sterling company of Rmad. You know what, amongst a sea of big-wheeled air-bagged VWs and some shiny Vauxhalls, my Micra was unique. No 'copy, paste' for me then. If you're near enough to visit this evening gathering, it's well worth a visit as there was a few really nice cars there. First Wednesday of the month from 6pm.
