Ok i will be getting my '84 bluebird on the road soon but have a problem. On the whole the car is mint as its been off the road for 20 years but being a datsun there are still a few bits of rust that are generally all over the car. Now my question is how to stop it getting any worse. My budget doesnt stretch to a full respray and i think matt black would ruin it so what do you guys think? The offending beast.

As you say matt black would be wrong, though it was still common for these to be offered in '80's two tones divided at the upper door crease, such as Brown over gold. Dark grey or Blue over silver etc. which could work well. Plenty of creases to disguise partial resprays if the colour match is imperfect, & pinstripes/coachlines were also common & potentially useful too. Don't think there's any need to go too extreme anymore for these to stand out.

Rust can be a bit like an iceberg. What you see on the surface is only the tip. To stop it you'll need to take the paint back to clean metal and treat the rust with something like Dinitrol Converust RC900 or similar (From . They have a section on rust! Doing the two tone thing would be good once you've treated the rust though. Period perfect and if you can do it yourself, not so expensive. As will all car work, the effort put into the preparation will be the key to success.

Thanks for the input guys, surprisingly the bottom half of the car is in good condition with only a couple of scabs on a corner of the front valance, worst bits are, big scab in the middle of the bonnet, rust starting along all the passenger side of the bonnet, seam at the bottom of the rear screen, each corner of the rear screen, bit between the gutter and where the roof comes back up. As wagoneer says you have to take it right back to good metal, as ive found that kurust etc and a bit of paint arent enough to stop it coming back, thinking about trying to get the best paint match in a rattle can, sanding back the rust treat and fill and paint. As for mods, with it being a 1 owner 25000 mile car the only thing i will be doing is putting on a set of celica supra wheels on it, for now.

I second the Dinitrol Converust treatment. Kurust is a waste of time. On small bits like that I use a dremel to get back to clean metal, treat with Converust, then use a filler to fill any pitting, then I use an airbrush to touch in. You can get a really fine spray which makes an acceptable touch up. You'll need to do a bit of cutting back and it won't be totally invisible, but it's certainly way better than rattle can painting.

Rust and repair isnt such a scary thing, Looking at your pick I can see the edges of the bonnet need a fettle like many above have said, treat it. body work is 99% prep which to me is kinda therapeutic get rid of the rust, sand it all down to bare good metal, if it needs welding,(WCS) and your nay too good, get a mobile welder in, he will get it to filler standard. and gods lordy sake don't Matt black it! looks peachy as it is

Some of the rust on my 910's are similar to yours. You have one disadvantage with the saloons, where you have the chome panel of the A pillars. The rust behind them can be awful.
