Hi,
I just did a full service on the mk2f polo a mate has bought. It's a 1.3 with 82k on the clock.
The previous owner had been topping up the oil with wilko's mineral oil (what a clever chap) and it has no service history. It was still on it's original cambelt which was worrying.
I took off the rocker cover and was amazed at the amount of black sludgy-gunk that was pretty much everywhere. I cleaned off what I could from the inside of the rocker cover and put it all back on, so for now it's just got nice fresh oil and a new filter but still a lot of sludge.
What can I do about this? I've thought about a wash out with a paraffin gun and an immediate oil and filter change, as most types of engine flush are basically paraffin as far as I know.
Any ideas? The engine runs pretty well and doesn't had any bottom-end noise so it's definatly worth saving.
Thanks

Run some cheap, budget semi synth oil through it. A few hundred miles, oil/filter change. Repeat.
I did this with my Golf and it's great. I didn't want to flush it so went down the cheap oil, frequent change route.

You will surprised how black the 'new' oil will come out after 10 miles!

If you use an oil suitable for diesels they have a higher detergent loading, so will clean more than ordinary petrol specification oil Ttfn Glenn

I agree with all of the above!
Much better than using a flush. A flush can do more harm than good if it dislodges too much at once. You can get blocked oilways that way. Do a few changes with cheap diesel - extend the intervals gradually, and it'll be as good as you can get.

I think i would be tempted to drop the sump for peace of mind, just to make sure oil pump strainer not sh#tted up, and clean out sump.

I use a cheapy Adsa (or other brand) oil as flushes, run car for 10 miles or 15 minutes on mid range revs if not road worthy with a new filter then put in a mid range oil for the next 500 miles checking regularly before using the correct manufactures recommended grade with the correct oil filter, don't scrimp on the filter used.

Don't stick diesel oil in a filthy engine like this - the detergent will lift the dirt and carry it into places it shouldn't be in. Better to use petrol engine oil, even if it takes longer.

If its due a cambelt anyway whip the head off and stick it in a bucket of petrol then scrub off with a stiff brush. I can do a headgasket on the 8v's in half hour and the parts are probably cheaper than a load of oil.

Thanks for the input everyone, lots of useful knowledge! It seems that it's something that will usually have to be done over a long period of time.. However, this; If its due a cambelt anyway whip the head off and stick it in a bucket of petrol then scrub off with a stiff brush. I can do a headgasket on the 8v's in half hour and the parts are probably cheaper than a load of oil. makes a lot of sense as it's such an easy job, and the cam and exhaust manifold are due to be replaced soon anyway! With Euro's current sale a full headgasket change comes to a whopping £24 so i think i'll be doing it next weekend. Thanks again everyone.

Take the sump off and clean the pick up pipe. If it's been sludged up, the likelihood is the pick up with have a few holes left to suck oil and it'llprobably be a bit tappety due to top end damage. I have done the petrol clean thing, but make sure the breathers are off before starting the car. (Can't link pics through Flickr anymore due to them 'upgrading' the interface) Clean: flic.kr/p/iSzcv9Blocked: flic.kr/p/iSxmrhBlocked pipe killed my engine (bottom end damage).

(Can't link pics through Flickr anymore due to them 'upgrading' the interface You can for your own images: 'you' > 'photostream' > 'edit' > right click on desired thumbnail > copy image location > paste to forum > change the last 'm' (medium size) to a 'b' (big). Sounds more complicated than it really is, but it is the fastest way and leaves you without extra Flickr URLs under the image.
