Hi all,
I'm posting this, hoping for a mercy mission for a much-loved car which is currently heading to the crusher. I know they have something of a cult status, so it's worth a shot.
Two things to get out of the way first:
1) This is not my car. It belongs to my friend's mother. I suggest if you're interested, we have a chat, and if I think you're both serious and not a tool, I'll put you in touch.
2) It's broken. That's why it's £200.
First, some more details. It's a 1994MY GLS, which had ABS fitted as an option (standard in 95, I believe). It has circa 230k miles on the clock, and has been owned from new by the same family. I don't know how many names have been on the log book, but I suspect there is only one previous keeper listed. It is currently MOT'd and taxed. I think there are still 2-3 months tax on it.
Condition is average. There is some rust, but nothing scary. It wears a few battle scars. It's missing a rub strip on one rear door. Attempts have been made to break into it in recent years, resulting in both front door frames being kinked. It needs a pair of front doors to be 'right'.

Story:
My friend's dad (now sadly no longer with us) bought the car new in 1994. He used it as his work car until 2005, by which time it was showing circa 210k. It was then my friend's mum's car, and the first car of two of the family. In that time, all it had (until around 12 months ago - see below) was routine servicing, a pair of rear shocks, and a rocker cover gasket. Absolute hero!
I'm sure I don't need to tell you of the cult following these cars have. We once got a calculated 80mpg out of it over 200 miles.
Good points:
# Awesome story (I think!)
# Radiator, alternator and clutch in the past year (well...radiator was done at Christmas 2012, so slightly more than a year, but hey...)
# Fun project...!(?)
Faults:
# Big one, first - suspected headgasket failure. It's tricky to start from cold (although I managed it after about 15 seconds), it's letting out a fair bit of blue smoke (all the time), and it's getting very hot.
# Central locking is touch and go. The OSF lock has been damaged by break-in attempts, and the NSF door isn't actuating the C/L, which I'm led to believe is often caused by brittle wiring.
# Possibly various more trivial things...but it's £200...with tax!
So...possibly a bit of a long shot, but they're only looking for scrap money plus tax, in the hope that someone (probably local-ish) will take on this much-loved but 'playworn' car as a project.
If you're interested, drop me a line for a chat, and if it sounds promising, I'll put you in touch with my friend's Mum.
cheers
James
