Hi Guys well Ive got some funds together for a tig welder, I know from mig welders the best you can afford not the cheapest!
So I have available around 3-400 quid to go shopping what would you recommend?
Cheers Chris

You really won't get anything decent for that , only very very basic .

What are you wanting to weld with it? For alloy you need AC, although according to the net it can be done with DC (but probably not nicely) which i never knew till i just looked!
There are some good discussions over on the migwelding forum both in and out of the TIG section. Let us know how you get on as I would like a TIG myself mainly for the variety of things you can do with it + you can buy bottles of pure argon now rather than having to rent another one of them which has put me off in the past.
If you go for a used machine beware you will/ might need more than a normal household mains supply to run it from.

For that budget you only get some really poor new.
I'm not up on prices but try and get something from a known brand like kemppi, miller etc

I started with £350 Chinese ac dc Tig and it worked fine on mild and stainless but was hard work on ally unless it was very clean . Replaced it with an r tech 160 amp ac dc which was £600 second hand and is a cracking bit of kit for ally with all the hf and ac balance controls for welding dirtier ally ie wheels , manifolds etc .
I have a full size rent free bottle which was £160 for the first fill and £70 for a refill which lasts around a year .
I'd be looking at around a grand for a good ac/dc setup with bottle etc

Got a nice Migatronic 160 for £600 used with a fair amount of extras thrown in. Works nicely but a bit small for serious alloy work.
