Well not Renault 12s as such, more about the running gear. I have just acquired a Renault 12 based vehicle with a 1397cc engine. My knowledge of old Renaults Is not existent and a google search doesn't seem to produce much info on them. Although running, my engine and gearbox are pretty tired, were there any other cars that used this engine and/or this RWD gearbox?, what's the chance of finding another gearbox? what is parts availability like for these engines? Will these run happily on unleaded? etc. etc. etc. I'd be grateful for any input. Apologies for the lack of pictures but I will start a readers ride thread when I've finished work and I can get some photos, thanks.

They're front wheel drive? Just have longitudinal engines/gearboxes. I'm fairly sure the 1397cc is the same as used in the Renault 18 (though you'll have a hard time finding one of those). The renault trafic also used a 1647cc engine which I believe shares the same mounting locations.

Head to Romania, plenty of Dacia over there to cannibalise! And yes, FWD.

I have several 12's, and a mountain of spares. I'm overseas right now, but live on the south coast, when back in the UK
Shout if I can help -or no one else here can turn up the stuff you need.

Just to muddy the waters a bit further - I did say it was a Renault 12 "based" vehicle, it seems it's less R12 based than I'd assumed, I've just had a look in daylight and it is actually RWD - the vehicle in question? - a Dacia Shifter. Does anyone know if this is even a Renault gearbox?

The 1397cc engine in a 12 is nearly exactly the same as found in Volvo 340s, although a 340 has a heftier 72 bhp. Plenty around, everything's available for it, and run happily on unleaded. Boxes are shared with 18s and Fuegos so a bit more rare. 5 GT Turbo engines will quite comfortably drop in if you love torquesteer The Megane 1.6 16V K7M/K4M engine also bolts up to the box, 110 bhp and injection. Rest of the conversion is harder though, but it has been done in DAFs (similar layout).

I used to have 12 TS with a 17 Gordini engine with twin 40 webers etc. Huge fun and an easy conversion if you could find the parts.

I cannot help you, I am merely here to applaud you for acquiring such an obscure vehicle.

haha, Dacia shifter -> Mégane Coupé F7R in it! as far as I know it fits straight! and with the Volvo transmission, bulletproof! and then, as it is featherweight at the rear end + 150bhp from the F7R = drift machine! It would look much nicer with an R12 front grill and headlights, though
