Moving on a bit from my LED question earlier, I have just been researching my high intensity brake light, I want to use LEDs, calculating the power input required to run these LEDs its about 5w, but according to what I find on the internet, the output is equivalent to about 80w Halogen!!!!!!!! so that's not far off looking up into a halogen downlighter, From what I remember the rules n Regs state 21w is the max allowed, Now is this consumption or output. ?? Seeing some of the Moderns driving about with Ultrabright LED strips on the front, its consumption,

I'll be interested to see what you come up with. I used a strip of LEDs as a number plate light (the originals were broken and I fancied something different) and it's much brighter than the stock candles, but the car passed it's MOT earlier this year no problem. Moderns have lights that are so bright they are positively dangerous to oncoming traffic.

LED's are measured in lumens. (brightness) ? and sometimes given a wattage equivelent.
even my old Integra has four side/brake lights on the rear. i don't think there is a max amount of the old style bulbs you are allowed to use so i guess in theory you could have 20 21w old style brakelight bulbs and still be legal? the main thing is to have the correct brightness for the side and brake to be legal, not so sure on quantity.
the only problem iv'e encountered with the replacement LED bulb is that the brake light will feed the sidelight through the internal resister. i fitted a diode in the wiring to cure this.
a little trick iv'e done with the Barracuda rear lights is to have a small red LED in the indicater lamp so it glows red with the sidelights and fitted in the main bulb holder a bright orange LED which easily overpowers the red LED when the indicator flashes.
and another advantage of LED bulbs is you can use micro wiring instead of the chunky wiring normally used on older vehicles.

The wattage is output but as you say a 21W LED is brighter than a 21W bulb and as LED's as still a new invention on cars the regulations have not been changed to allow for this. BUT all lamps and bulbs have to be 'E' marked which most LED's will not be.
An MOT tester will not pick up on this because firstly he is not allow to remove the bulbs to check and as far as he is concerned the light works according to the rules, the only time a bulb's output or E markings might be checked would be if the car was involved in a fatality or serious injury incident where the lights were or alleged to be a factor in causing the crash.

Ive got some Britax LED lights to fit to my Herald, and the brake light in the stop/tail lamp is uses 65mA current www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390664257382and the matching fog light uses 75mA both of these lights are much brighter than the stop/tail lights in my polo's. there are different ways of wiring LED's up though, with 12V strip led strips, they normally use 3 LED's in parallel and a small resistor as opposed to using one led (and resistor) in series. by wiring the LED's in parallel you can cut the current consumption by 2/3 compared to series wiring the LED's

Thanks Barry, I never thought about considering the individual LEDs, that's a whole lot of Lumens that I can chuck out, obscurely, I was thinking about fitting LED downlighters and saw I could get 12v ones, which just fit inside my glass lens, 85 watts of brake light might just be what I need as I will have a stop and tail on either side that will flash as indicators, as the function of stop and tail will not be there when indicating on that side, hence the appeal of my bright High level,
