So, I bought a 1965 1198cc Cortina a couple of months ago which had been in storage about 8 years. It`s almost mint, but obviously needed some light refurbishment before going on the road.
After replacing the brakes and fuel pump (used), as well as a full service, it was MOT time, and it passed first time with no issues. It was spluttering like mad on the way to the test centre, and only just made it there. I added a bit more fresh fuel, with some lead additive, and it was running a lot better, but still not quite right. I then had the HT leads, dizzy cap, points, condensor etc changed, plus got a carb rebuild kit. With all of this fitted, it`s better, but I`m still not happy.
The problem now is, you always seem to have to drive with the choke out a bit. It always starts first time, and after a minute, you can have the choke all the way in. It happily sits at idle like this. Then try to touch the throttle, and it stalls. When driving, it`s perfect when at higher revs, or higher speeds. BUT......a lot of the time when changing gears, it splutters at low revs, especially in 1st and 2nd. Quite often it will stall, and the only way to combat this seems to be to drive with the choke out about 8-10mm. The idle is too high when at a stand still then though.
So, a question to anyone more technically minded than me......any ideas what this could be? The mechanic who did the work is trusted, as I`ve used him for over ten years. He seems to think it just needs a good long run, but I`ve probably done 50 miles in it, and it hasn`t made any difference at all. I want to have it right for the new owner, who is picking it up next week.
Any help/advise/thoughts much appreciated.
