First things first, hullo all, from Teesside.
I've got a 1992 Mercedes 190E, in timewarp condition - photos will be coming once I've got it up to my standard. One thing to note is the number plates are starting to fade, which makes it look a little dilapidated. What type of plate would it have had when it was new? I presume waaaay too late for pressed steel, but would it have had textured letters or just a boring plastic modern type?
Really dull question, I do apologise, but it's going to be shown off later this year and I want it to be spot on.

I like them, but I'm not sure if my car is (laughably) too modern for them to work...

MysteryMachine had some plates made on his Escort Estate project with the proper 80s font.

I have a 1993 Carlton GSi, same story, needing a rear plate and I want it as original. It might be the same as the Merc would have had. I tried every supplier I could find at shows or on the net a couple of years ago but not one did the correct font, they assume that the modern font on a plastic plate would be OK. I would be very happy to hear of a company who can do a period correct plate for later retro cars (if you know what I mean) This style, which to be honest looks very average to me and I thought would be easy to get. Sorry , don't have a close pic.

I need your help to get back to the year 1985.

Thanks all - looks like it's a slightly wider font than modern, so when I come to it I'll have to get them done by someone decent.

If you do find someone please update this thread, I want one but had no joy finding them.
