observing the readers rides forum over the last few years, almost every thread starts with loads of cool messages and pictures "my dad had one of those". in allot of cases the motoring history and desire for interesting old cars is passed down or inherited from our folks, neighbours, friends. what is now our retro ride, was bread and butter cars for them. thought it would be a cool idea for its own thread, show us your dads car ! for example, dads austin a40 somerset ! you get the idea

My parents had a Mk1 Civic when they got married, then a Chevette. Both rotted into the ground in the early 80s. Then they had this: that's me. (I've had 5+ Estelles) then they had an orange one, then a red Sierra, then this: (I've had 5 Favorits and two pickups) And ran a succession of other claptrap at the same time, notably a Hillman Husky, a Kawasaki GT550 Spectre, a Morris Oxford, and these: Then into some nasties, a Belmont, a Mk3 Escort, an AX when we were really, really poor, then a blue Felicia, then a green one, and by this point I was driving and there is another two dozen cars since that. The absolute culmination was this in the mid 90s: I have a black one now, same year, just as unreliable. Oh, notes. My dads first bike was a CZ 175, mine was a CZ 125 Sport. His second bike was a Suzuki GT380, mine was a RG125. I've also had three Minis although no van (yet). They also had a Fiat Regata and a Maestro and a red Mini. Pretty much just buying what they did then!

Kinda felt for my dad, a keen driver with additional driver training in the army fire service and fire service, he wasn't able to afford a proper car until the mid 80s.
His mate worked at Silverstone in the pits, and managed to get hold of the pace car one season. An experimental MG Maestro 1600, an early 1984 model but with the o-series engine thrown in.
My dad bought the car, it replaced his 1974 MK3 Cortina, and the street were amazed at the almost brand new hot hatch now taking its place outside the house.
With a magnetic blue flashing light on the roof Starsky and Hutch style, it rolled well as both a family car and fire service emergency vehicle.
But it proved unreliable, it kept breaking CV joints, and when it got hit by a Granada whilst on a shout, its fate was sealed.
It was replaced with a brand new 1988 Sierra 1.8 LX. And from there, things only got worse, with various Rover ownership until his current car - a Prius. A car which has dumbed this once skilled driver down to a dangerously retarded level..

Must dig out some more this is the only one I have on 'Puter My Dad being a shift worker at GKN, Heath lane Smethwick, could only afford what we (retro boys) I guess drive now easy credit n such didnt exist then, Earliest memory was a Mk2 Zodiac, hand painted red and black MK4 Zephyr v4 which was cruddy brown and prone to over heating a lot, swapped that for a MK 1 capri 1600 gold with matt black bonnet then onto a 73' Humber Sceptre Then finally a 77 Ford Granada 2.0 My old dad god bless him In Rhyl back in 81 or so I think sitting by his beloved Humber

We've defo had dad's car threads before but always happy to remember him... His first motoring was on two wheels. Norton Dominator 99 was quite hotted up. He practised driving in this freind's Elva before getting his four wheel licence. Later in life, after a fairly humdrum series of family cars, he bought one he really wanted, an SD1 Vitesse. I took this photo on a holiday in Normandy in around '92ish. It also received a somewhat non-standard engine rebuild, exhaust, suspension etc. In contrast, here's a couple of old photos of my maternal grandfather who had a licence from around 1920.

heh, they had a Vitesse when I was little, then an Avenger, then they moved onto several years of Fiats, with 2 or 3 131's, a Uno, a Croma and finally a Marea, then they got his 'n' hers Jags... LOL my parents buy cars when they are only a couple of years old and then run them until they die nearly, I used to love the 131's but god those things were rusty, I remember a door dropping off a yellow estate they had...

Sorry for the poor quality, its all I have these days. 2 for the price of one though! 1993 - Dads company Calibra 16v redtop, Mums Manta GT/E with period go faster flashes down the side. The Manta rotted out in 1996 and dad sold it for peanuts. The Calibra was only with us for 18 months. The head went porous at 22k miles and Dad and his boss had enough after 6 months of legal battlew with Vauxhall. It was chopped in for a 2.0 Carlton GL. I was 10 at the time and, understandably, devastated!

Some good stuff in the middle there but also some crud, incidentally my parents separated in 2002, my mum still has the 1993 MX5 she drove out of the marriage in and Dad is currently smoking my jag x300 as I have no use for it and he has no money as mum loaded most of that into the MX5 on her way out!
