Hey all,
My son's about to pass his test,he's 18,and obviously wants a car soon as.Can anyone recommend any good insurers for new drivers or has had dealings with them.He hasn't got a car yet but it will be small and cheap...Micra or Corsa...something like that.Quotes through the compare sites are just crazy!
Any advice much appreciated.

CIS was good when i tried to get insurance as a new driver (in 2000). adrian flux are always accommodating to unusual drivers
you can haggle with insurance so give that a go.
its going to be a lot what ever happens though

I've also heard that if you put yourself on his policy as an extra driver will bring the price down quite alot. Put more drivers on, to lower the price even more.

I'm with adrian flux , although I'm not young . Ive been with them for 10+ years , they are easy to deal with and helpful . Do you still get a discpount for doing a few extra lessons after you pass ? I did this it was called pass plus and i had three lessons , town . driving , country and a roads and motorways . Knocked a fair bit off . I would reccomendactually phoning and speaking to someone , rather than just relying on what comes up on the searchs . Turning on the charm , being nice polite and sometimes a bit cheeky can help !!

The lowest I know of among friends is 1500 and a tracker in the car.
You wont get insurance without a tracker under about 2-3000
Realistically based on how good/bad your postcode is you're looking at 1500-2500 on a tracker insurance.
The ridiculous tracking insurers that monitor your acceleration/braking/cornering will give rebates for good driving, however they are very strict, or you can get some that just monitor what time you drive and how far.

My fourth year is up this month and my quotes on basically everything over 1.2 fully comp are 1k.
Basically add all the women in the family you can, mothers, sisters, aunts, as named drivers.

Don't mean top sound rude but can't he have a retro such as a Beetle or Mini? They've always been cheaper to insure for me than modern cars. My 2001 Corsa 1.0 cost £1400 with a black box, Ford Capris, Cortinas, Granada 2.8s, Dolomoites, Beetles etc are around £370

Thanks for all the replies.
If I had my way he'd be in a retro for sure but for some reason he's set his heart on a Punto.Hopefully once he starts seeing the quotes he might reconsider.

Doubt he'd get a classic policy as a daily drive and not owning another vehicle at 18 to be honest although its always worth trying a few places.
The logic behind more drivers on the policy is that he will therefore spend less time driving it if others are out in it - it works for some insurers

One tip I have is... Avoid comparison websites, they always include commission for mr Peter Jones and the like. Try and go with companies that you have to actually call up for a quote and that don't do online quotations, in my experience they tend to be more competitively priced...

I've also heard that if you put yourself on his policy as an extra driver will bring the price down quite alot. Put more drivers on, to lower the price even more. That's true. Adding myself and my wife to our daughter's policy when we were getting quotes brought the price down. My daughter is the main driver on the policy.

Insurance is always stupidly expensive for young drivers, I am 18 and drive a 1.6 Saxo VTR and i pay £190 a month which is £2200 a year with no tracker an i'm insured with 1st Central, once i get my mini on the road it will go down to £700 a year, and with some companies it is sometimes cheaper to have your own policy

The trackers are another way to go about it. Will drop insurance. And using one that makes the cars not be used over night helps a lot with price too. Classic insurance used to be only 25 years and above or needed to be a second car, don't know if this has changed?
