Does anyone know if its possible, on a beer money budget, to make a saab turbo engine RWD. I did hear somewhere that they use a triumph bellhousing pattern. Anyone???

Always suggested but no-one's ever tried to my knowledge. Suspected collisions with starter/manifold and things like that Sure you could work around it though! Only way to find out would be to get an old block and a TR7 with a 4 OD/ 5 speed bellhousing, see what the game is

I have feeling the answer is no. is One of the last issues of Retro Cars had a letter on it and the answer was it is not possible as SAAB completely redesigned the motor. Mind you with a lot of money anything possible. But in saying that I think the very early 1700cc Triumph built SAAB engine would be rear driveable but why?

I have a video on my laptop of a Skoda Rapid where someone has mounted a 2.0 16v Saab Turbo engine in the rear, so i would think it's possible.

The Saab gearbox sits under the engine doesn't it? So it might take a bit of work to make it work in a front-engine, RWD car.

Yeah but didn't that Uno use a complete clip from a 99 with the gearbox CROWN wheel reversed? They pretty much cut out the whole Saab subframe and grafted it to the back of the Fiat.

verily your reverence, go for the volvo turbo option , the hard works already done ;D Your right, my tightfistedness will only cause pain and misery in the long run. Still 80 quid for a complete 16 valve engine and box had to be worth thinking about.

The SAAB engine is backwards isn't it (in the 900)? Cam chain is near the bulkhead. That means the first thing to do is turn the engine around!
You're right that early ones were based on the Triumph Dolomite, so maybe it's possible with some parts swaps. Usually the problem is space for the gearbox where the floorpan goes....
