If the condenser fails then often it damages the points as well. A quick check is to flick points open with ignition switched on. If big spark then you can bet condenser is / has failed. This spark then eroded the contact area of the points so they should be considered a "pair" and both changed at the same time. Paul H I'll swap both over at the weekend and get the gap right with my shiny new feeler gauge this should make it start again but I fully expect it to still have the original problem ;-(

The running to 3000rpm and then dying sounds like a poor spark.
Check the engine earth is good and replace the HT leads & rotor arm. It's quite possible for the conductors in them to break down as they warm up. Also check the wiring from the dizzy to the low tension terminals on the coil and make sure there are no breaks. Check there are no cracks or signs of arcing on the plugs and that they're the right grade.
With faults like this always suspect the ignition before attacking the carb. Carbs do go off tune but more often a complete failure is electrical

I had a very strange fault with my B reg 1.6 LS Capri many years ago. It was running fine, started to be difficult to start then refused completely. I changed plugs, points, condenser, distributor cap, rotor arm, plug leads, coil, brand new genuine carb (Ouch money), stripped down distributor, checked cam and ignition timing, compression test all without success. Other people had a look and were equally flummoxed. In the end went back to the distributor and stripped it down again but could find nothing wrong. Then I realised I hadn't removed the earth tag spade connector from the side of the distributor body so unscrewed that. Guess what - corrosion between the parts so poor earth for points. Quick clean, reassemble and it started first time. So a tiny bit of alloy corrosion cost me around £350 in parts that weren't needed. Moral of story is don't assume anything and check everything even if you think that there is no way it might be the cause when trying to track down a fault

spark plugs were totally black!
culprit is the autochoke linkages getting stuck so I need to get a new one (or switch to manual if it's easier / cheaper?)
