for daily duties. Must be ready to go and less than a grand. Somewhere near the northwest would be ideal but I will travel for the right car! Can part-ex a really really curse word mot'd and taxed citroen xsara VTR if it so takes your fancy, it has rain sensing wipers - omg11!
What have you got?

I remember the days when you could pick up a tidy Capri for £500, a tasty 190E for £400 or if you pushed the boat out a 200sx for £800. I remember when all of the internet was just fields...
It seems I am being delusional thinking I could pick up a tasty RWD retro motor for less than a grand. I fear I may have to just try to get some excitement from something FWD. Sad times. Sad, impossible times.
I'm off to cry into the steering wheel CD changer controls of my Citroen Xsara....

Should have said really - it also needs to be half decent on the old go juice - having to drive 2 hours a day 5 days a week at the moment. Late 20s to the gallon minimum really- 30s would be better. That puts anything with more than 4 cylinders out of the equation and probably 2.0 max - the older the better as my insurance for old metal has just plummeted! Paying through the nose for my winter runabout (Citroen Xsara) but a Porsche 924 is just over £100 a year! Go figure..

Vivas and Dolomites in daily driver condition are 1500 plus from what I've seen.. and a useable Manta for under a grand? 2 grand if you're lucky! It's a week before Christmas and cars on eBay are still fetching a premium- this is good for the owners I guess, and probably for the scene as a whole. Bad for me at the moment though!

Still Mk3 Granny I get 27mpg out of my four cylinder 2.0, and barely get above 30mph when doing ten miles each way along the A11. A decent long run will get you into the thirties, I'm sure.

possibly not retro enough yet but if you want creature comforts on a long run for under a grand you can't beat a couple of tons of teutonic efficiency with leather and full electrics retrorides.proboards.com/thread/160439/mercedes-e300-tdand it gets 30mpg all day long (and I don't hang around ) - from a 6 pot durbo tiesel.

My 24v Carlton GSi is good for 34mpg on the motorway with cruise control on. All depends on how you drive it really

Hmm, my big volvo fits that bracket, it gets 30 mpg. And I'd be happy to straight swap for that Capri... If only.
