1997 Audi A6 2.5TDi (140bhp) – This is the C4 chassis, based on the former Audi 100 with the 5 cylinder engine and 6-speed gearbox
Mileage: 213,154
Tax: expires 31 December 2013
MOT: expires 7th January 2014
With regret the time has come to sell my wife’s Audi A6 . We’ve owned this car since May 2006 and have driven some 80,000 miles since we bought her.
Whilst it’s currently taxed and tested, I’m selling her as spares and repairs because it’s been for a pre-MOT and needs a lot of work to get it though. Hence I’m keen to sell before the end of December as the tax runs out on the 31st. The MOT is due on 7th January 2014. I’d rather see it go to a good home than a scrap yard which is why I have listed it here. For a person like me with the most basic of spanner skills, it would cost too much in garage labour costs for the job to be done. However, for someone with the skills, tools and time, it could become a nice project to work on. It would also be great to see someone keep this on the road as a project on this forum. All the details of what needs to be done are listed below.
It’s the 1994-1997 C4 model, based on the older Audi 100 which are becoming very rare and hence has big retro potential. It has a sound engine and gearbox and it’s been in almost everyday use since we bought it. The engine is an 2.5TDi (AEL) 5 cylinder engine which produces 140bhp and was introduced in the A6 as an upgrade from the 115 bhp engines used in the Audi 100. It has a 6-speed gearbox. Driving in 6th at 70mph the revs sit at 2,000 rpm.
She still drives and goes well, especially on the motorway. Whoever buys her before the end of this month will be able to drive it home. Its also comes with half a tank of Shell V-Power – roughly about £50 worth – 380 miles according to the trip computer, more if driven steady. These cars are capable on a long motorway cruise at returning 60 mpg at legal speeds. The official combined rating is 46mpg. It has climate control and the air-conditioning works. It also has the factory fitted stereo system, with tape deck, radio and CD stack. I was going to remove the CD stack but I’m happy to leave it if I get a reasonable offer.
Other features – its has one touch electric windows, airbags, power steering, ABS, plenty of room for four tall people to sit in the car in comfort and a large boot. It comes also with both sets of keys and the plastic masterkey.
I have a lot of paperwork with the car recording the servicing, MOTs and other work done over the years, mostly by D&S Motors in Sunderland which is run by Dave and Shane who are VAG specialists (before we moved to Northants recently).
I'll let the images do the talking:

I’ve looked after her, by keeping her serviced and MOT’d and I’ve washed, waxed and hoovered her at least once a month, or more frequently with the occasional polish in between. As the pictures suggest she still looks pretty good for its age. The pictures do show that it’s collected a few ‘character’ marks over the years, but it still looks good. The bubbling front wheel arches let it down a bit, as does the small dent on the rear driver’s wing which happened thanks to somebody in a car park who failed to leave a note. The speedline alloys are also quite scabby. Loads are available on the 'bay of e' or it may be a good opportunity for an upgrade for someone who may be in the mood to mod this as a project.
The really bad bits needed for the MOT will be:
So there you have it. I've priced the car at £250 which is not bad for a big car that runs well with great potential that can driven home with half a tank of diesel!
I am also open to sensible offers. It would be nice to see it go to a good home!
So PM me if you're interested.
Thanks for looking.

The really bad bits needed for the MOT will be:
- Sub-frame has corrosion, with a hole at the end of the frame near the driveshaft on the passenger side. The metal is also thin on the other side on the frame. Hence it needs welding. I’ve learned that this is now acceptable for the MOT
- The sub frame bushes and roll bar bushes need to be replaced
- Rear shocks are both leaking and need replacing
- Rear brake compensators are corroding on both sides and will need replacing, potentially with the brake lines and brackets
- About a 1/3rd of the inside faces of both front brake discs are corroded
- The radiator is weeping slightly as evident with pink coolant stains on the radiator. I usually have to top the coolant every 2000 miles
- There is smell of Diesel under the bonnet that suggests that there may be a small diesel leak from somewhere, but it’s not leaving any large patches yet and fuel consumption is still normal
- A vacuum hose has perished
- Two tyres are borderline on tread (205/60/15)
- Tracking is also out, with wear on the shoulder of the front passenger wheel
- The wipers work but it has a mind of its own on intermittent. This could be a relay problem
- The side indicator repeaters on both wings are loose as the plastic lugs have snapped off both of them – they could be glued or wedged in or just replaced
- The drivers side wing mirror glass sometimes works loose and wobbles because one of the plastic teeth gripping the glass is weak but this is simply fixed by pushing the glass home in the holder – its never worked so loose that it has fallen out!!
- It will need an oil and filter change as the service is due
