I think that in SA cars etc retain value massively compare to the UK.
I would be looking at possibly a 5 cylinder Mercedes Benz motor with gearbox or adaptor plate to For box.
100% no idea what I am talking about by the way.
The Cortina engine bay is big enough to take quite few applications though.
Unfortunately in South Africa nothing comes cheap.

I know the sierra did, not sure if the p100 got a diesel bigger than the 1.8 but if it did i think its likely to be the pug motor. Rare in the UK but more common in europe, i don't think many other countrys liked the 1800 kent TD ? Mk2 granadas got the 2.1, sierra and Mk3 granada the 2.3/2.5 (later 2.5 scorpios used the VM), LDV400 the 2.5 but availablity in SA ?

why would you want to retain the ford gearbox?
if you plan to take the merc route, i would swap engine AND box and make the adapter on the rear end of the box, (weld merc shaft onto ford shaft)
which cars are cheap in SA?
did the city golfs come with diesel engines?

I was just thinking if you were going to fit a xud peugeot (TURBO ) as suggested above you could buy a citroen xantia motor and an ldv manual box for not a lot of cash (£200 maybe )and it should be an easy fit as the xantia motors are mechanical injection and easily tunable as 306 citroens seem to get silly horsepower for next to no mods and use the same motor as a xantia AFAIK the zantia has the xud engine mentioned

You probably mean the xu D9 engine. Seems to be a good option and I shall investigate. What mileage can one expect out of these engines? Are they expensive as far as spares are concerned? sorry mate, yes xud9. Very reliable, spares reasonably priced (at least over here anyway) They are a popular engine with taxi drivers, who regularly run them to the moon mileage with little or no maintenence

If you change the oil regular the xud9 will go on for miles mine had 220K bbefore the gearbox let go and was still pulling like a train, ther was a bloke fitted one to RWD gearbox was that Scimatar??
Apparently FSO's used the non turbo xud diesel engine and were 5 speed!!

With talk of the LDV van, is either this or the MK3 Transit available? The 2.5DI Transit engine was originally a Peugeot design (rejected by Peugeot as being too noisy!) and it along with the 5-speed M75 gearbox later found their way into service in the LDV (old Sherpa) van.
While no ball of fire in N/A form, that is a very rugged and reliable combination that would also keep the car all Ford. Unfortunately all of the van gearboxes have the lever coming out of the casing much too far forward for use in a P100.
Best bet would probably be a complete diesel drivetrain conversion lifted straight out of a car, depending on what is available?.
