Theoretical question for now... In South Africa the Ford P100/Ford Cortina LDV/Bakkie (Sierra based P00 never manufactured in SA) was most popular in 1600cc Kent and of course the V6 Essex engine versions. Very few diesel engined vehicles were built and sold. In its day it was the best selling one tonner in the country.
I can probably source a P100 (I simply like them!) in decent shape, but the engines are usually very high milers and thus in poor condition and were in the first place not economical units. If this materialize, I would like to use it as a daily runner. With the current rediculeous fuel prices economy is a priority and that might mean fitting a diesel engine. Reaching for compromises in sourcing a power plant the following questions arise and remarks apply:
1. Fairly old engine in order to be affordable. Ease and cost of maintenance usually fairly simple and affordable. Consumption/economy usually less efficient.
2. Make of engine. Toyota I believe is not really economical and in SA very sought after and thus expensive. What other options - Peugeot, Mazda, others? Once again the factors above under 1. come into play.
3. Engine-gearbox combination from same donor vehicle with eye on simplicity, economy of conversion and prevention of adapter plates issues? Thus restricted to an originally longitudinal engine and not transverse engine donor vehicle?
4. Reliability. Determined by manufacturer and application?
Any thoughts?

Tdci out of a 2001< mondeo should be pretty cheap to get hold of the full car. Will need a bell housing but I think its the same pattern as the duratec (correct me if i'm wrong) and you can buy one off the shelf.

i'd suggest a mercedes OM651 out of a 190D
fairly economical but also indestructible and RWD
get one with a manual 5 speed for eco bonus

I would imagine being in S.A that the Peugeot 504 diesel engine would be the easiest to source, and probably also install seeing as the Sierra did use a Peugeot sourced engine (though not sure it was the same 504 lump)
OM sounds like it would be bloody brilliant though, but inevitably quite a lot more work and probably far more expensive.

Was the sierra not sold in SA with a TD? easy swap in a cortina ?
Alternativly the pug 2.1, 2.3 and 2.5 TD were fitted to the sierra and granada so B/Hs are available "somewhere" to bolt one to a ford gearbox for ease of fittment (no tunnel or prop mods ect).

Unfortunately 504's have become almost extinct in SA. Most rust(ed) in piece(s) unfortunately, all with dangerously high km's and neglected. |

Renault vans come with RWD setups and diesels, but i guess vans are far more expensive than passenger vehicles..
Did they sell Opels or Vauxhalls in SA? The Isuzu diesel engines are well built, but slow.

Before you go down the diesel route do you have the option of LPG ? Often LPG works out cheaper than diesel in UK but obviously it depends on price of diesel and LPG. LPG is around 80p ltr whereas diesel is 135 litre. Of course a diesel engine is more economical but that is offset by LPG being 2/3 of the price.

Seems to be a good option and I shall investigate. What mileage can one expect out of these engines? Are they expensive as far as spares are concerned? |

I know the sierra did, not sure if the p100 got a diesel bigger than the 1.8 but if it did i think its likely to be the pug motor.

I was just thinking if you were going to fit a xud peugeot (TURBO ) as suggested above you could buy a citroen xantia motor and an ldv manual box for not a lot of cash (£200 maybe )and it should be an easy fit as the xantia motors are mechanical injection and easily tunable as 306 citroens seem to get silly horsepower for next to no mods and use the same motor as a xantia |

An old LDV Pilot has the gearbox needed to bolt straight upto an old citroen/Pug 1.9 (XUD9, or indeed the 2.1 XUD11, or any of the petrol XU variants)
Also needs a pug 306HDi flywheel+clutch pressure plate, a Ford Galaxy 2L clutch friction plate, the LDV Pilot spigot bearing fitting into the end of the crank, and you may as well finish it off with the engine mount brackets from the LDV Pilot too
Standard Ford propshaft pattern, 5 speed, and a good strong gearbox
