Yay or nay.
Particularly of the load lugging variety.
Been offered a D reg estate for pennies, needs couple bits for MOT but solid. Thinking of buying as a load lugger and dog carrier.
Anything to look out for ?

Yes, all day long.
Electrics can be eccentric and niggly, but they are basic and easy sorted. My personal experience aside, someone with much greater volvo knowledge will provide a comprehensive checklist.
I take it its a 2.0 n/a?

I didn't like mine (G reg 740 SE) compared to the E reg 240 GL it replaced but to be fair provided trouble free motoring with no serious problems. If the fuel gauge works then you are lucky. Mine didn't and I found it's a common fault so working secondhand gauges difficult to find. Same engine as my 240 (2.0 CSi) but not as economical. Handled better than the 240 though. Good towcar. They can rust - end of sills and rear axle started to crumble on mine. You won't be disappointed.

Oh yea, good point on the fuel gauges. I've never owned a volvo that didnt have a jerry can in the boot.

About 50% have knackered dash clusters in some way. Watch out for rear dampers being fubar, that'll be £50 to replace the pair. Make sure the heater works in some way, and the fans - unless you like taking bits of dash out.
Otherwise, they're great cars. Even with the slight issues above they're very durable. They're not cars that will leave you at the side of the road that's for sure. I once had a double mattress in the back of the 940 with room to spare on top for a load of IKEA furniture. I took 15 wheels and tyres up to my recent drift day with room to spare - and that was just in the back! The cabin area was still completely free.

What is the 940 like ? Are they just a revamp of the 740 or a completely different car ? Whilst owning a 240 first ruined my experience of the 740 I do find myself drawn to the 940. Mate (in his 70's and had previously owned 145, 245 & 340) bought a 250,000 mile 850 diesel estate after being told they were bullet proof so mileage didn't matter and whilst it was basically OK it also showed it age and was constantly needing attention to the point mate say "no more" and scrapped it.

My current daily driver is a 940, good cars, solid and reliable, bit dull but pretty smooth and comfortable, enough power to overtake when needed and get the back end out if it's a bit wet (mines the 2.3 turbo) a bit curse word on fuel compared to modern stuff but good car, and LOADS of room in the back, I got a pool table in mine not too long ago (folding legs but full size)
