Picked this up last week. It's a 1932-35 (impossible to tell) Number 2 box brownie. Did a bit of digging and this film is 120 width film. A quick trip to the local camera shop and I come away with a reel of Ilford FP4 125asa. Now where is thwe best place to try a 80+ year old camera that I don't have a clue how to use, whether it works, if the film is correct, how to photograph etc... Lacock! Took a reel of film (a whole 8 pics!) and am now waiting for them to be developed.... Anyone else got any reto cameras to keep me amused in the meantime.....

Nice old thing, 120 was always the pro film of choice due to the size, you could blow it up much bigger and retain the quality of image, 35mm is the best film for convenience.
If you get in to film photography the Brownie will be relegated to a lovely old ornament, get a decent little TLR and enjoy shooting in 120, but I do recommend you start to develop and print your own. I still have a dark room set up as I love my old film cameras, but to be honest it hasn't been used for a couple of years and I can't see me using it, if your interested PM me and we'll see if we can work something out, there is everything you need to develop and print your own films, although I can't remember if the spool in my tank does both 35mm and 120 or just 35mm so you would maybe need a new spool/tank which are cheap anyway.

I've got about a dozen box Brownies of various years. In fact I've got my late father-in-laws that he bought new in 1930's and took with him whilst in RAF (aircraft mechanic) throughout WWII. All the pictures of him from those years in Middle East were taken on this very camera. I've even got the original operating instructions ! Around here a lot has changed since FinL took pics pre WWII so I plan on taking new pics of same area using same camera but 80 years later :-) With some of my more tatty Brownies I've had an idea of fitting a cheap digital camera working inside. Seeing you have got the camera I hope you develop the film. B&W is easy (I've still got full colour darkroom equipment in loft) and a message on Freecycle might source a developing tank. The 120 size film is large enough to do contact prints without an enlarger. I did this at school in 1960's by putting negative in a frame and placing in classroom windowsill !
Have fun.

Cheers for the replies. Am getting the Film professionally developed this time because I want to get a good idea of the picture quality or lack off... and because I don't posses the knowledge, space or equipment for a dark room.
To be honest I'm no David Bailey (as the pics I'm sure will attest) and love seeing old kit used. There lays the fun for me.
Another week to wait yet....
In the maentime I seem to have aquired a Standard Conway.... I'll post piccies as soon as possible.

I still use my Nikon F5 regularly, and I really should dig out my Mamiya 645. Love a bit of 120. It has a rectangular format, so you get a whole 15 shots per roll! I used to do shoots on it and only take 2 or 3 rolls. Really makes you consider your compositions a whole lot more.

I only have 8 shots per roll.
As you say, each picture is precious. Problem I have is using the viewfinder and shooting from the hip is a bit of an art... one I have yet to master.

I do love an old film camera. I assume that picture of lacock is a bit of a play on william talbot? a pretty iconic peice of glass in the photography world.
the pictures are brilliant, even with the modern cars in they have an old world look that you can not get by digital processing (not in the same way I don't thing).

I've never got rid of any old cameras so have Canon AE-1 programme, A1, & 500N film cameras. Did use the A1 a few years ago with no issues. I've also got a 120 camera with a fold out (bellows) lens (Billy Record 1), and a No2a Brownie (assume broken).

Oooh, I should have joined in on this... I like rollfilm and for the past couple of years was shooting on a Phase One P40+ as well simply because giving up the 645 format was a pain, though dropped back to a D4 and Sigma SD1 now.
But the analogue collection... man. Polaroid's my thing, to a big extent. I had a sell off of my duplicate/unused film cameras, but I've kept all my Polaroids.
Having said that, I had a lot of fun recently with the Lomography Belair X612 when it came out. Cheap new way of getting into 120 and variable formats (no mid-roll switching).

Here's a thing that might amuse people into film. Lomo recently did a Konstruktor camera kit, but a few months before it was announced, I noticed these (they've been out for a few years) being cheap on eBay. I think they're £7 now! geextreme.com/?p=743(Ignore the site, I haven't had time to update it for ages). Pictures are suitably low-fi, but not awful and working with the TLR format and waist-level finder is great fun.

Really would like a Hasselblad to use again like I did at Art School.... Hmm, someday.

USed it alongside the brownie on the Lacock trip. Will see what the film looks like from that once it's out. Am taking the BB away with me over Xmas. Have got 6 rolls of 120 and a proper camera bag so am ready...
