Just a thought,a few of us were chatting over the inevitable beers on Sunday night and the subject of e-bay rising costs came up. A conversation then ensued about how much it would cost to set up a rival to e-bay and the cost was guesstimated into the millions. That was the end of that. Now I've been thinking would an online autojumble work? You know how an autojumble works, you list your item as per e-bay but instead of an auction it's listed with a price and a bit of bartering until both sides are happy. Only transport related stuff, but no multiple posts showing wibblepoo alloy wheels from china a thousand times so used items only or NOS Somewhere to list your bits to a bigger audience. I'm not taking anything away from this sites own classifieds section,in fact it could be fashioned as a sideline to RR.then advertised on all the classic/retro/hot rod etc etc forums. So an old car online autojumble. Thoughts??

So what you're after is a cross between our classified pages and gumtree, really? Sounds feasible, after all both of those are free... if someone could get several car clubs/forums etc interested, why not?

I've thought about doing it a few times,.. but I can't be bothered... however if I've thought about doing it, it is probably a good idea ... and if I've thought about doing it, but haven't, then it is probably a good idea that will make millions.

I think it would be a great idea if you can pull it off. The main problem I can see is getting enough interest in it straight away. Its all well and good getting it up and running but you need the content on there from the off to get people hooked, they need to be able to see it as a viable alternative to ebay. If you go on it and there isn't a lot for sale it not going to look good to either potential buyers or sellers
it would probably be worth going around as many motoring forums as possible to try and drum up as much interest as possible before hand. Ebay may have its problems but you know that if you list something it has the potential to be viewed by thousands of potential buyers, the more items you have listed, the more people it will look appealing to
user feed back as per ebay would be good too, maybe in each users profile there could be links to any profiles they have on forums?

I rent a webserver to run my mum's emails (don't ask), which allows me to install website scripts. So the question is, what would be a suitable domain name?
retrobid.co.uk? cartat.co.uk? retrojumble?
autojumble, funnily enough is taken!

I guess some of the things you need to think about is how are you going to police it (ie only car stuff, but also are you going to limit it to retro only), issue resolution (it wouldn't take much in the early days to sink it with a few problem sellers/buyers), covering yourself legally for when (and it would be when sadly) stolen goods or a scam operates.
How are you going to structure it/search trhough it (it needs to be user friendly to really take off)
I do quite like the idea that you go to someones virtual 'stall' and if you can link it through to their forums for sale site would help to set it apart from ebay/gumtree

I also quite like the sound of the idea, as I'm fed up of typing in Triumph Toledo in ebay and getting offered 100 diferent brake and wheel upgrades from umpteen foreign companies.. However, I can't really see it being much different from seperate forums' 'parts for sale' sections. For example, you scroll through, see a part you want, buy it if it's at a fair price or maybe you ask for a deal through PM; sounds very similar to your idea. Also, even though your idea links forums together to see more products from across forums, I can't see this being of huge benefit as the parts you're usually after reflect the forum you're part of. For example, I'm not going to find replacement Toledo ball-joints of a hot-rod forum, probably! Don't think I've worded it the best, and don't think I'm putting the idea down - I still think it's an interesting idea, and could be brilliant depending on the execution of it

If I were to build something up, then it'll be a lot cheaper than ebay, but may not look as snazzy to begin with!
I think it'll be free to start with, but with only paypal payments allowed. Even if it is a part for collection, this way everyone is protected!

good thing with ebay is you usualy can find what you want

I thought about it. Even registered the domain name retroswapmeet.com and started building the site. Then struggled to see how you could generate income out of it. Advertisers - both autojumblers and "related" advertisers need traffic to entice them to pay. Nobody is going to pay to advertise their stuff on a new site getting 100 hits a month.
I came to the conclusion that without a large advertising and marketing budget, it needs to be added to an existing site with a lot of traffic, otherwise people will continue to use ebay where they know that their parts are guaranteed maximum exposure.

Cracking idea but i can't see it will ever take off. Ebay is a giant and from what i've read ebay has also bought out gumtree. Hence you can no longer list cars for free on it. There is a rival to ebay already out there uk.ebid.net/ same idea but there's next to nothing of any use on there. As a seller what you going to do pay to list on site that used all over the world or a site very few people know about. I,d love to see ebay fall flat on its face but i think its just got too big.

Agreed it would be good but need some push to get going. About 10 years ago I paid for a lifetime membership of ebid, no fees ever, suck that ebay! Sounded great but in reality as no-one uses it you're better of selling on ebay and parting with huge fees, more than covered by getting 2x or 3x the sale price.

I appreciate e-bay are a massive worldwide resource for us petrol heads but it also sells everything else, I was thinking along the lines of transport stuff only,no cheap Chinese deals no plastic Buddhas with flashing lights. I will have a look and see if I can get some people to assist me and spread the word,I also have a site name chosen and a website domain. Keep yer eyes open!!

I know Facebook isn't everyone's cup of tea, recently I have seen Loads of groups set up to sell stuff for free. Seems to work very well , I can see it as being a huge threat to ebay.

Swapz is the ideal place to advertise... as long as you are specifically looking to trade for a ps3 or pit bike lol
