Plenty of Volvo 850s around for that sort of dosh. Or indeed older Volvo estates. Suppose it depends whether you mean performance or old-skool styling by "badass". If the 850 is too big, then S40s are pretty easy to find at £1k too and a T4 would provide a bit of oomph. The auto transmission thing limits it a little. W202 C-Class estates are a possibility. And Rover 75s, but that stretches the "badass" thing. Actually one of these could be perfect: Cheap, looks cool, most are automatic. Might have to lose the spare wheel in the boot to fit the dog and luggage in though.

E36 tourer. But I am biased. My 323i is comfy, fun to drive, looks quite nice and is quite spacious. On the downside with the seats folded the load area is an awkward shape and does 25 to 28mpg with a 5 speed auto.
