Boot floor from leaky rear light seals, battery tray under the bonnet, slam panel and inner wings, rear panel underneath rear lights, inside edge of the boot. Check the vin number under the flap on the driverside by the seat, if its not there then ask questions. rear chasis rails can rot through and cost a few hundred quid to replace.

They rust all over and smoke from the engine!!

Check the engine is cold, start it look for smoke on startup as it can be valve stems. Check around the air filter for excess oil. Rust has always been the killer on these. Check the footwells are dry as sunroof leak.

My mate's Mk4 Escort is off the road because of rust. Rear arches, sills, tops of wings and inner wings have all dissolved or are dissolving.

As above. Rust is the killer. Engines tend to smoke if not looked after, but they'll go forever anyway. I had a 1.6 CVH and hammered out 8000 miles in 2 months, on top of the 130k it had on already. Don't think the oil had been changed for 5 years it was like marmite, but I couldn't kill it.

A smokey engine is a far easier fix than a rusty shell as theres's plenty of CVH lumps about, If the car has a sunroof look for rot in and around the sunroof tray as a new cassette is a big expense.Look for poorly fitting panels as being a 3i it's likely to have seen a hedge at some point.

But a mk4 escort on condition, don't worry to much about the engine
Check the battery tray from in engine bay and stick you head under the dash with a torch, check the seat mounts, front of floor pans, sills inner and outer, front panel, x member and boot floor, check around the sun roof for scabbing and open it up and brake hard, if you get showered in rust beware!
Interior condition needs to be good as a lot of it is very hard to get now in mint condition, check tyre wear as they eat tca bushes, also check the rear tie bars are solid, rusty ones can snap throwing you off the road!!!

The few convertibles I've had have been good no rust
I was under the impression they were made else where

Convertibles were made from reworked estates rather than hatchbacks - hence the tail-lights.
Not significant, just a random fact. Good luck with the viewing!

cabrios seem to either be totally rotten or quite solid check the main grot spots as mentioned an you should be good I think.
