I did a road trip, to the Alps, have some pics.

I should mention, we did it in Georges Steel grey 205 gti, powered by a D8 406 V6 3.0 24v engine, which cruising at 120 kph was returning around 36-37 MPG, and made for effortless powering out of 2nd gear corners with its sheer grunt

Its the third one George and myself have converted, slowly working through the issues such a conversion presents, throughout the drive many others had bonnets up and scrounging water very often, one picking up his rear silencer off the road! We didn't have the bonnet up once, other than when we arrived and had everyone flocking around looking at the crazy english 205!


Issues we did come across, is that the engine package is quite tall, so the sump and downpipe sit very close to the road, and with the additional weight of the drivetrain its sitting a little lower than standard, however its not horrendous.

Also due to the low height it was tricky to get the tracking done DIY style the day before, so we did have a little too much toe in.


Engine mounts are a little tired now, we have a clunk from one of the bushes, ride height needs raising and a better damper fitting, clutch actuation is a DIY conversion to the pedal box to take the hydraulic 406 master cylinder, and is still a little heavy so needs work on the leverage ratios.

Brakes were 306 gti6 with std ferodo premier pads, and though we didn't go as mental as some of the guys running competition pads and track tyres, we did get them hot but had no fade.


basically, it was EPIC.

It was indeed an epic trip and I need to get myself one of those funny cameras with a pointy bit on the front!
