I'd zetec the scrote or if its a 1.3 just sling a 1.6 cvh in. Really simple to do and will be started and finished before dinner. Underpowered rwd cars are rubbish unless its snowing. Or raining, or has just rained, or you fitted skinny tyres, or a LSD....... I grew up with xflow RWD fords, you don't need power to have fun in a RWD with our weather. there are some good fwd cars, but pretty much ALL rwd cars will make a curse word rainy day trip to work fun. I will admit that 1300cc wrapped in retro tin will be tail happy especially when you want it to be. But anything built after the Early eighties will be a tad heavy to be playing about in. Especially a 316 e30.

I can't say, only small bimmer i had was an old 6 pot 320, didn't have much oomph but neither did it have much traction. Could just pump the tyres up hard I guess.

Any idea what sort of mileage people get out of these? They wont be great on fuel, but it will never be cheaper to run one than now

This car is rear wheel drive, is no slouch, is comfortable, is practical, you'll struggle to spend mega bucks even on a minty-mint one... they're even getting over the old image problem. Turbo version exist too. You could do a lot worse than a Volvo 240. Here's one of RR's own with an earlier 140 nose end... but there are plenty of other things you could do to these old things.

I believe they still make both the Santana (and MK2 Jetta) in China, the Santana is one of the few big cars i really wouldn't mind having (though ours were built well, so it may not be too hard to find an old UK car).

Oh yes, I like that! And as luck would have it, I have a friend with a minty mint one that wants to get rid... However I do fancy a turbo

on that budget you can't beat a 200SX for bang for buck... insurance may be painful though...

may be better getting an S12 rather than an S13 or S14 at your age, not as powerful standard, but still immensely good rear wheel drive turbo nutty fun and you may have more luck getting it on a classic policy...
