Its the wifes car,got a call from her saying it would not go into any gear and she was stranded in town,went out and managed to get it going again by starting it in gear with clutch pedal down and it was fine but now its doing it more often,any ideas chaps?cheers

Possibly clutch slave cylinder if its a newer fezza or even possibly a worn pressure plate were the thrust bearing sits ..

That is strange, since when I have seen them go (I have had two MTX-75s die on me over the years) the car will still drive, but give out an occasion thump as the CROWNwheel hits a spot when it has no teeth. That is not to say that is the only way those type of gearboxes go.
I would have also have said slave cylinder. A randomly changing biting point is generally one of the first givaways.

The 1.8 Escort GTIs normally suffer with diffs but they tend to pull the car over the road like the wheel is loose. Sounds like a clitch to me, either way the box has got to come out.
