It looks like the Street Machine DMC Chevette has been found; alive and well and looking exactly the same apart from a few minor changes. It looks to have faired very well - but then Andy, at Andy's paint and Body in Irlam, Manchester always were the very best - shame they're not around any more because they really would have been up there now...
It appears to have been 'asset stripped' - the Manta bias pedal box has gone and so have the wheels - ATS Classic style Manta rims.
I haven't seen it yet and I'm due to when it appears from the lock up its been sitting in - not mine!!
Thing is, I loved the car up until the paint stage - seemed like a good idea at the time and was all very much a product of the time. In truth, it was a bit too lary for me - in concept, the pearl yellow was incredible; especially when you got it in the sun and the purple was supposed to be like a Cadbury wrapper and I suppose it did achieve that - again especially in the sun. But the two for me was a bit - err, oh dear.....
Thing is I preferred it in its original red - but I didn't realise that until after it had been painted....
Question is, the person who has it now - a good and long term mate, will probably put it back on the road as is - with a Crossflow it was originally built with (not THE Crossflow but another one). More than likely it'll be for sale.
Question is? What would you do with it? Keep the paint and restore it back to its original concept - IE: get some replacement ATS wheels (probably; leave out the splatter paint!!)
OR - paint it standard type colour - like the original red??
I still couldn't live with the colour scheme - it would be nice to restore it and park it up museum stylee but then I don't have the museum nor the funds to do that...
What do you reckon?
cheers, Jon

Thing is, I loved the car up until the paint stage I think just about everyone else felt the same. If it turned up at a show in it's original paint now though...I'd be all over it, just because of what it represents. In a new 'sensible' coat, it'd (just) be a nice Chevette that 'was' Project DMC. My vote is for full restoration to it's unloved DMC guise...splattered ex-Manta ATS included. Anyone got any shots of the finished paint?

I'd keep the paint too. I reckon if it rocked up at a show now in its finished guise it'd go down a storm, even with people who don't know what it is.
Any idea how much he wants for it?

No idea yet - thing is the paint really needs looking at - he said it's ok but in places it's cracked etc...
Doubt if it'll ever look like a 'show' car after 20-years... But then does that matter?

Drive "as is" cracked paint and all for a year while making show appearances and then redo it however you like custom cars evolve over time, always have done, nostalgia is nice but not at the cost of pleasure of ownership.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I guess it depends what condition the paint is in now. If its in good shape, then are you going to get back the time/cost of the respray to a more sellable colour?
I remember following the build and wondering what happened to it as it just disappeared from the Mag. Would be good to see it back in its finished state

Must admit to me, as someone who missed out on this sort of thing the first time round through being too young (and nowhere near cool enough) if it rocked up at a show looking like it does in the picture above I'd probably give it an appreciative nod, probably a passing comment along the lines of "that's cool", and carry on. If it was presented "as is", as an aged show car and a piece of history, then I'd definitely be drawn in for a closer look even if I didn't like it as much- and it'd be much more interesting for it.

Sounds like a plan Mr Tumble. You can take me for a blast in it if we ever catch up. Black glove.

I pulled some random issues from one of the SM files here at Rmad Towers...success! I must confess, I like it a bit more than I used to!

I reckon some 15" classics or Compmotive FH500 rather than the 13s that would be perfect to the concept drawing.

Its got to be as is because as said anything not originally in the concept would be sacrilege rally,I followed this back in the day and it seemed to just disappear way was that?? A. Cos I hated the paint.... B. Because it was right on the switch over when the mag was being canned by EMAP, then sold to CHP because the former publisher then started Revs, which was sort of Street Machine updated-ish/with a massive FWD bent.... It was all about the time of the retro car-scene birth/inception - although Retro Cars wasn't even thought of then - think the original Retro was about to happen - or was that a bit later? All gone a bit foggy now! I know we started on the concept of Retro Cars at A&S with Simon Woolley about five years later?? - God we had to fight to get that accepted and launched! I think anyway - all a bit water under the bridge a bit....

That'd work. Though with the crazy tyre choice we've got now you could do 17s easily which would look mega.
