Hi. My sister's 405 TD estate has developed a slight problem with the power steering. When it's on lock (either way)the assistance disappears until you start straightening up. She says 'it goes stiff' but I would imagine it is loss of assistance.
I've not come across this on an old technology Peugeot - does anyone have any suggestions? there's obviously the pump, fluid level (okay), belt(okay), and the rack. I would think the pump is working so possibly rack itself?
If anyone has any model specific ideas that would be helpful as a full recon rack is going to be a bit dear. I have seen them with bits like the ram replaced before, but need a few more ideas. Car is back with me at the end of the month so like to try and gather the bits beforehand.
Thanks in advance!

not clued up on the pas system on it, but if its a mechanical pump the pressure release valve might be opening up at full lock. have you changed the fluid? its a lubrication system that is usually left out on services and left in for years upon years. a flush and change could be the answer

Hi - yes it's a mechanical pump on it and I don't remember changing the fluid. Certainly start with simple things! It has gone from okay to not okay in short space of time. swapping the pump would be a lot easier than the rack too.

Might be worth jacking car up and remove front wheels, then remove track rod-ends and check that its nothing to do with the susspension components, IE: top mount/bearing, lower ball joint, i have seen a dry bottom ball joint cause problems on many car's. you could also try engine running when jacked and do lock to lock with the steering, with and without track rod ends connected to see if there is any stiffness in steering, also another thing to check is the u-joint on the steering column, if one of these joint is siezed or stiff, your steering will go stiff then easy then stiff then easy, you get what i mean, i used to own a 405 but never had this fault with mine, hope some of this may help you on your journey to fixing the problem? phil.

Operating the steering jacked up it a good suggestion - I'd just been thinking about the steering components in isolation. We've run older Peugeots for many years and done thousands of miles with little more than usual usual servicing cambelts and the odd brake pipe.
I replaced the n/s ball joint last year and the o/s was done by her local garage for the MOT. I would hope they are okay, but a good tip to check the other related items. When she brings it too me it always gets a thorough going over but this year its had the bare minimum (MOT and then fix the fails) as she's 4 hours away. I'm sure we all now a car does not have to be very good to get a ticket!

lower balljoints cause this typically.
I have found with these you really do need to use good ones as cheap just don't last two minutes.
top mount bearings can make it stiff but generally all the time not just on lock, lower column U-joint is a good suggestion though never come across it on a 405, only a 205.

I would agree on lower balljoints, cheapo ones don't seem to last. Another thing I would add to the list is the auxiliary belt. It may not be taught enough, or simply too worn for the pump to work effectively when on lock (I had this issue on my Stag . OTOH, a fluid change may work wonders .
