I'm looking to get hold of a small rear axle. its for a go cart. I`d like to get one that is a real axle, think Volvo axle ie real diff, propshaft flange etc etc. but needs to be small sort of half/one third scale in comparison to a Volvo. I know its possible to cut down a reliant axle but it would be to heavy and the mechanical drag wouldn't be good. so my question is does any one know of anything that has/had such a thing fitted. want to make a front engine rear drive buggy for my boy, can do all the fab work and propshaft etc, just having trouble finding a suitable axle. any help would be great. cheers.

Reliant axles are quite light so doubt you'll find any car item that weighs less. What about ride on mower axle ? What engine are you planning on using ? ie is it shaft or chain drive etc.

I realise that I wont find a smaller car axle than a reliant, I was wondering if any one knew of some weird or obscure piece of machinery that had one on. engine wise I`ll use a single cylinder engine with centrafugal clutch.

Why not turn a mower axle 90 degrees so the pulley is on the side and facing forward ? Paul H

How about something out of a Bedford Rascal or its Suzuki equivalent. Think small Japanese van and see what they have. Or even a Suzuki Jimny.

Have a look for gearboxes made by Exeeco. They are industrial gearboxes made for slow speed use, but built like brick outhouses. They are megabucks new but peanuts used as they are quite specialist and supplied to order. You want the IB range, not IS. B stands for bevel followed by a number which is the 1:number ratio. You'd have to fashion your own input/output shafts but they have standard industry flange connections.
Otherwise, how about shaft drive bikes - Old BMWs, Honda CX500 or even 80's honda scooters as they have cvt gearboxes and bevel gearboxes in one.

What about building an axle ? You can get the components from off road buggy parts suppliers. The diff commonly used a Comet SCD 1 item but there are others avialable. Only problem is it's chain drive and not shaft. For example - www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_35768_35768Paul H

What do the 4x4 quads use? there must be a transfer box and diff in there. I believe most of them use solid rear axles, ie. no differential. Most of the ones which do have diffs use half shafts and wishbones, ie. no solid live axle housing. However, you're right that some do have live rear axles in them. Unfortunately, I think this style of quad axle is too new and too rare to be cheap enough for a home-built go-kart.
