The SOH has been given a Mk1 Ford Orion 1600 ghia for free, by her aunt, it's now surplus to requirement, said vehicle is in good condition, 55,000 genuine miles, 2 owners from new, full ford service history, but no t+t. It's also been off the road for 12 months garaged until recently, and currently sorned. The car is in Newbury, Berks. Were just outside Bath, the problem is how to get the curse word back home. 1. Do I MOT it in Newbury, hope it passes, tax it, and drive home. 2. If it fails what are the implications of driving it back to Bath with the failure sheet in hand, and hope I don't get pulled by the boys in blue. 3. Hire or Borrow a trailer bring it back that way. 4. Use my AA membership to get it relayed back, are they worried it's not t+t'd? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, technically you shouldnt drive anywhere if you've just failed an MOT, because the car has basically just been proved unroadworthy. Showing the failure sheet if you get pulled won't do you any favours.
The AA can refuse to sort you out if the car was 'unroadworthy' before breakdown, so I guess they wouldn't be too keen on lack of ticket and tax either.

You can book an MOT in Bath and drive the car along the M4. As long as you are driving the car to its MOT, *I think* its legal - that however won't solve the road tax issue. Best and safest bet is to hire a trailer.

You can drive legally with no MOT... (and hense no tax)
1. If you are on route to a pre-booked MOT test 2. If you are returning home after having an unsuccessful test 3. If you are driving the car from the test centre to a place where mOT repairs will be carried out. (again needs to be booked in advance)
you cannot....
1. Drive more than a "reasonable distance". 2. Deviate to do other chores 3. Drive on a motorway.
I checked with Nottingham Constabulary vehicle unit on the above.
I was told that 20-25 miles was about the limit for "reasonable distance". But this would be down the the discretion of the copper that spotted you. I was bringing a car from Leicester home to Nottingham via my local friendly test centre. I was told this was fine.
I was told to keep off the motorway as I'd get at least 3 points for being on the motorway with no MOT and then the points for any defects on the car. eg 2 bald tyres would be 3 points each = total 9 points.
A chap locally got done for driving with no MOT because his car was booked in for an MOT that day, but he stopped of on the way to buy some fags and a can of coke etc. straight there, straight back.
Now we have ANPR expect to get pulled pretty quick too.

Akku has it cock-on. And don't forget, kids if it fails with a 'major' fail, if you get pulled on the way home you are in doo-doo too. Trailer hire is £35 a day, Newbury to Bath is a noce easy run down the motorway. I know what I'd do.

Talk nicely to local breakdown firms as well. A mate has had some luck with a local firm who do his non-urgent collect & delover in between their AA/RAC/Greenflag work for the cost of the diesel and a little for a drink. I have a mate in the trade and I get trade priced drag in / out / allabout service which seems to cost me £40 regardless of distance within the county.
When we graduuated up from renting trailers me & Steve were like "we're the motoring playboys now", gotta love that "i'll send my man down to collect it" vibe.

I wouldnt drive it if its been off the road for 12 months. All you need is a sticky caliper or wheel cylinder to cause a break down, then youre a sitting duck for the boys in blue at the side of the road. Youll get busted for an unroadworthy car and recovery costs.
don't forget that things like brake lines under the car can corrode unnoticed after 12 months of being parked up and be on the verge of total failure, just waiting to burst at a critical moment. Happened to me before- never again!
