So there came that time where I decided that I needed to get something practical for the commute to work, and for carrying my mountain bike and all the usual boring type of stuff most people buy a car for!!! And something I wasn't going to have to do up, or needed lots of work that I could also use in winter. As I didn't want to have to use my Uno again, in the winter salt that they love spreading on the roads!! I fancied something different so I set myself a deal that it wasn't going to be another Fiat... honest!! I looked at all sorts, a Mk3 Cavalier, Mk 6 Escort's, a Mk4 Golf, Citroen Xsara's, Peugeot 306's etc... But nothing really jumped out, then whilst on the fiatforum one night I came across an advert for a 1.4 Tipo. Only less than 10 minutes up the road from my dad's, well no harm in looking right? Turns out it had only done a genuine 70,000 miles, taxed & tested and just had a full service with a cambelt and tensioner change. Luckily for me the gentleman selling it even had some roof bars, a cycle carrier which was a bonus for my bike and an extra spare wheel!! Also a tow bar you never know maybe I'll get some use out of that? Despite having a look and concluding it was pretty good, and didn't need to much fettling I still wasn't sure so I left it.. That was about two month's ago, then I got an email from the seller asking if I was interested would I like to buy it for £300? So after a second look, a couple of beers and a chat the deal to buy it was done!! Well that plan not to buy another Fiat went out the window.... Anyway here's some pictures the seller kindly emailed to me, of the Teapot in all it's glory Not sure what my plans are yet, but I've already made a small shopping list for some items that are either broken or damaged that I'll need to find. Overall it's pretty good for the age, a few marks and minor dents but nothing too bad. And the interior is fairly good too, apart from the stitching which has come apart but that can be sorted pretty easily. First thing I'll do is give a bloody good wash and polish!! those bumpers and trim are crying out for some back to black!! Not to mention the original number plates aren't going to pass another Mot, so a new set should brighten up the car no end. ( yes I know you can't see them in the pics but trust me they look pants!! )

My father had a 1.4 damn good car which got 40-45 mpg depending on how he drove it. Needed new rear shocks at 70k (common problem in these), did a clutch at some stage and took it through to 210000 km before he sold it

Cheers everyone!! hopefully it should be good for long journey's to and from work and pretty reasonable on the Fuel Haven't seen many about at all either, so hopefully I can bring the Tipo up to a decent standard and do a few bits on it along the way to make it a bit more mine!! Hasn't got the digital dash I'm afraid, they only come on the 89-93 DGT models. My brother used to have a 1989 1.4 DGT which was randomly also in silver, the digital dashboard was ace it was like something out of KITT in Knightrider!! And you had a button which could change the speedometer from MPH to KPH, which was nice if you ever need to go abroad to Europe. Would love a sedicivalvole, but they are rare and you'd be pushed to find one for less than £1200 these days from what I've seen. Been having a think over the important things I need for the car, like wheels So I was having a search on the internet for something different, and seen these as fitted to the Fiat Barchetta. Not sure 100 %, but with the Tipo being a square - ish sort of car I think it needs some blocky shaped wheel's? We'll see what's about when fund's are less tight, so at the minute I'll be rocking the steel rims and trims for a little while!!

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

Wow! Nice one-don't remember the last time I saw one!! I think I'm the only person in my area with one!!! hopefully I'll get it taxed this week so I can pick it up. I'm looking forward to getting it out on the road, as much as my mountain bike is looking forward to going places with it at last

So I finally picked the car a about two weekends back, on the morning of the Auto Italia car meet at Stanford Hall. Had a bit of time to take a couple of shot's, just after I picked it up!! And here it is next to my Uno at the show, after a quick clean outside my dads before setting off I made the fatal mistake of allowing my dad to drive it back, now he's quite taken with it and wants it for himself!! Hmmm... So after having a good look over the car in the cold light of day, there's a few more knocks scrapes and broken bits than I thought but overall it's not bad for the year. The car was fully serviced and had a new cambelt and tensioner done, not long before I bought it. Which cost more than I paid for the whole car, so a can't complain And I have a folder with all the old Mot's, bills and receipts from new. On the downside the car has been used like a van, so I have lots of interior trim, door seals and various other odd's and ends to track down!! And so the fun begins..

Uno, Tipo.... all you now need is a Tempra! Great car. Cheers yeah I think I'll have to find one now to complete the set!!! Did used to drive one years ago when I worked at a Fiat dealer, they had a Diesel Estate as a pool car. Would of bought it at the time if I'd had the money, for now the best I can do is a toy model of Fiat Tempra...

There's a Tempra knocking about in the village in Gateshead where I used to live.
I trained as a driving instructor years ago, and spent some 'shared' training time sat in the back seat of another trainee's Tipo. That one had the digi dash.

My brother had 3 of these and I spent about 5 weeks getting the last one ready for it's MoT when he decided he didn't want it anymore so I stuck it in a lock up and got rid of it 5 years later. It still started on the button. It was a smooth nippy driver and felt quite powerfull. Very roomy too.
Anyway I tried to sell/give away parts for it and no-one wanted them so I dumped loads. Full engine and other bits.
I still have some new rear shocks and a good un-ripped gear lever gaiter if you are interested.

Although I'm making a list of bits and pieces I need to get at the moment!!! not sure I need those items specifically but any spares is good spares if there going As it happens it's going in for a Mot soon, not that it's due but probably best to get it done a bit early so I can get it out the way. Like you say they are quite smooth engines, and really good for a 1.4 as I had no trouble getting up to the legal limit on the dual carriageway. When I picked this one up it had sat under a tree for months, fired up first turn of the key without any hesitation. Mind you I've still yet to get it back off my dad... as he 'borrowed' it to take my uncle and grandparents to an appointment last week!

That is very nice indeed... These are so darn rare!!!
I assume it's one of the very last before the launch of the Brava/Bravo?!
It's nice to see one of these being kept just right as it were... Do you have any big plans for it at all?

That is very nice indeed... These are so darn rare!!! I assume it's one of the very last before the launch of the Brava/Bravo?! It's nice to see one of these being kept just right as it were... Do you have any big plans for it at all? Thanks the pictures do flatter it a bit but it's pretty good for the age. It is one of the last ones before the Brava/ Bravo's as they were all on a M reg if I remember rightly, but I had seen a Tipo once on a N reg so there must of been some late registered 95 cars about. At the moment my plan is just to fix the broken and damaged bit's and pieces as I go, and do a few bits underneath to protect from the winter salt. If money allows I may change the wheel's for some Alloys, and a few little bits but nothing that couldn't be reversed. In some way's I like the fact it's still original right down to the radio cassette player, number plates & wheel trims, so maybe I will keep it standard. But there again I do like the idea of doing a few subtle modification's, just to make it a bit different. A bit like what I've done with my Uno just that it would be a Tipo instead!! but at the moment my dad is still pretty keen on having it. So if that was the case I'd keep it standard as my dad is a bit past the boy racer stage.... I'll see how I go and what comes my way, as I already have my other Italian stallion fighting for the affections of my wallet!!!
