Been trying to convince the other half that we should get another retro, but she wants a modern car. I've managed to convince her to settle on a MK2 Astra, but is it retro?

Retro or not, i'd love a decent Mk2 GTE. Ideally a red 8v.
go for it.

To be honest, why not? There are a lot more modern cars posted on here sometimes - seen a few 90's BMW's - so go for it. Just keep it subtle though, a guy in my town has a white one and it looked real good for ages til his Max Mower split personality convinced him to stick all the plastic in his house onto it - and now its ruined. Nice engine swap, lower the biscuits off it, subtle smoothing and some tidy wheels - i suppose that could go for most anything really!

I wanted a MK1, but SWMBO doesn't like them, says they're too boxy. Snob!

When did the Mk2 come out? 1985? 21 years old. Retro enough. I like the idea of an Astramax van with GTE oily bits

Car of the Year back in the day. Have seen a few recently and they do stand out - classic desirablity test! Go for a three door estate I reckon! Or go mad and get a Belmont.
My personal fave is the later CD. Top spec, white lenses and usually nice metallics. Less obvious (and cheaper to insure) than a GTE.

Basically the same as an SRi, but with acres of velour and stick on wood trim. Crashed it into 5 Mongolians in a rented mondeo that had run out of fuel just over the brow of a hill, They had turned the lights off to save the battery and were turning it round to push it back down the hill. No really.

Sad to say SWMBO nearly bought one of them years ago.

Retro enough by now - if a 88-95 passat is retro, then a 84-91 Vaux is as well. GTE a good tool, a lovely genuine one on the ebay thread a while ago.
If you get one beware of joyriders - this is one of the 'highest risk of being stolen' cars in the UK, even now, because of ease of access and driving away.

Do it! I had two of these... both 1600 'L' 5-door estates, both low, both with wide steels. Really great, really useable. I caned the nuts out of the first 'till it blew up, the second only lasted a few weeks before it got robbed by travellers for ram-raiding. 'Family II' lump is useable, or drop in a spicy one FTW. Nice neutral handling, easy to hustle along, easy to live with. Summary:

I borrowed a 1.4 belmont off a mate for a few weeks when they were everywhere. Did everything I asked it to do and went well enough. In fact it was pretty fast in a straight line.

I'm really sold on the idea. But now she's changed her mind, she want's a Mk2 Golf GTi. After all that grief, she choses a retro anyway. Still rather have an Astra

Astra FTW, Golfs too popular, why not just take on a nice satin black celica instead?
|
|
it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

She loves Stuyizz's Celica, but can't really afford to run it. I'll try to work my persuasive charm on her. If I can convince her to go out with me, I can convince her to do anything ;D Hmm, Astra or Celica
