Any suggestion how i can improve the handbrake on my mk1 escort, its a 1972 model. everything seems in order and ive adjusted it as much as i can but it still not that good, i know they were not brilliant when new but its due for an MOT and i cant see it passing. I know the mk2 had a different arrangement and i thought about swaping the whole thing over to the mk2 but i cant seem to find one locally. The problem is that i used to get the car MOTed by an old boy who knew the standards of the old cars but the new testers seem to think that they should be to the standard of a new car. The shoes are maybe a little bit worn so I'm going to change them but other than that verything else seems fine, ive also deglazed everything and cleaned it all up

I wouldn't put new shoes on just before an MOT, they might take some time to bed in. I had the same problem and only passed when the old shoes were put back on!
If you have manual adjusters, tighten them up till the wheels lock, but best done just before you drive into the station!
I believe that the handbrake is tested as a percentage of the foot brakes efficiency, so the handbrake, will feeling poor, may be OK and to standard.
I can also recommend a retro/classic tester if you're in Kent.

Handbrake should not be that bad on an Escort it should lock the wheels pretty easy unless you have massive tyres, has the cable stretched?

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

With these old setups that have no doubt been bodged through the MOT a few times i allways start from scratch, back off the handbrake cable, then set the shoes (is there a lip on the drum?), then do the cable last to give 4/5 clicks, check the pivots are not seized and the cable free in the outer ect, as said above the H/B is a percentage of the hydrolic system so if you still have the small drums on the rear they will be pretty curse word so you only need a percentage of curse word to pass if that makes sense

got new shoes today, but i forgot to order new wheel cylinders, soon as i get them ordered ill change the bloody lot. I know the handbrake does not use the hydraulic wheel cylinders but as I'm at it I'm going to replace the lot, its only gone to cost £35 to change the lot so i think its worth it
