Does anyone have any advice on what is the cheapest way to insure several cars?
I currently have two on separate policies with full no claims. If I want to add another I won't qualify for a no claims bonus using the insurance industry's weird logic because it is a 'new' policy! If the car is modified in any way this becomes quite expensive.
Has anyone tried these multicar type policies? Do they cover modified and classic cars? Do no claims bonuses work in the same way? What about 'any car' trade insurance? What do you need to do to qualify and what sort of premiums do they charge?
Any info gratefully received.....

KFW has a policy with Footman James that he always praises, try giving them a ring. However, there's a 20 year cut-off. So all current cars would have to be older than 1993.

haha - it's peter james I'm with, but yeah, they do a grouped classic policy that allows you to put a load of 20 year old + old chod on, and then it only costs 15 quid to ammend the policy for new arrivals - even cheaper if you wait til you have 2 new cars to put on, as the 15 quid fee stays the same currently I've got a load of 80's J-chod, the truck, both beemers and probably some more I've forgotten on there, and the policy covers all mods except performance enhancing things, they have done engine swaps for me, but only going v8 - diesel, not the other way very helpful though, give em a ring! EDIT - forgot to say, afaik you don't accrue NCD with classic policies, though I could be wrong - the renewal's always been cheap with peter james, so I've stuck with em!

Tried a multicar policy once and it ended up I could a cheaper deal with individual policies by shopping around. When I needed to insure one more car then I had ncb available for sky insurance carried one over from another policy which was rather nice and saved me a view quid. I think the littler more specialist companies are a bit more lenient and flexible then the big named guys when it comes down to it.

A few years ago i had a multi car policy from Footman James, and was really happy with it.
I had my mk1 Escort, Chevette and 6N Polo insured on it. All were heavily modified and the price was really good - I can't rememeber exactly but it was roughly £100 more than i was paying to insure just the Escort with someone else.
At the time their multi car policies were minimum of three cars, and two of them had to be 'classic', which i think is usually 20 years and over.

Adrian Flux for me, it costs less to insure two cars through their multi-car policy than to insure one of them on its own so that's easy logic for me. I build up NCB too and it's pretty generous on mileage and modifications. The staff I spoke to all seemed to have a genuine enthusiasm and interest for cars and making sure I had the cover I wanted, felt a much better and more enthusiast-centric attitude than I'd experienced with other insurers. Pretty much everything that I was told I'd get by peers from the insurer, I can see why they come so well recommended now that I qualify for their services with my driving experience and NCB.

I'm with NFU. I've two sets of full no claims used against my Skoda & Smart. My van is "credited" with full no claims as well. They also do classic policies. One thing that seems to make a differenece to them is they are a mutual company. That means policy holders are also shareholders and depending on how long they have been with them are given annual "bonus". Personally I've been with them for around 16+ years so get the full bonus which works out at around £70 for current year. So whilst they might not be the cheapest the multicar policy plus the bonus makes them very competitive for me. Also no admin fee for any changes, I can ring up and they will cover me on any vehicle for a day or permanently. I've even insured foreign registered vehicles used abroad.

After my trade policy renewal went up by 50% for no apparent reason, I've just insured a couple of the fleet for road use on seperate policies. I think under £200 for 2 cars fully comp blah blah, I'd welcome any better ideas with the imminent fleet expansion....

All I needed was a policy to cover the lot but between modified Land Rovers, modified classics, normal classics and a boring Corsa, there doesn't seem to be a company that can cope!

There is a definite gap in the market for this.. I've had grief for swapping cars too often too! apparently over 3 different cars in a year is "not really allowed" from my ex insurer directline.. although when I did have 2 cars insured with them they did (after me pointing out I couldn't drive both cars at the same time) give me full no claims on the 2nd..

Footman James for me too, Both Fiesta's in my sig, with subtle mods £160 a year. However they don't like it if you value them too low! They've also become a big tighter on over night parking, lucky I just bought a house otherwise i could have had problems at renewal living in flat with carpark
Passat is with Direct line, I can have upto 4 "classics" with footman, but they're not competitive on my daily 'Sat sadly.
