Hi guys, I thought I would ask for some suggestions on this. Thinking of doing a bit of a uk road trip holiday, bit of camping here n there etc, not for too long because of work; few weeks sorta thing.
But..... What car to do it in?
I currently have a 2000 Subaru impreza which is awesome, sadly not the ideal mpg car for such a trip.
So I'm thinking... Diesel would be helpful for mileage and fuel costs.....
Fairly large; estate/mpv/off roader (so can sleep inside, carry lots of stuff)
Price.... Less than 2k ideally, I'm a bit broke as it is.
Fairly insurance friendly, only 23 with little ncb
4wd would be good, not essential. (Love it after owning the Subaru)
Once the trip is over I would like to live with it too, so tow bar, decent reliability, everyday machine.
Not after a project really, already have one I'm not getting to work on. Bit of work isn't an issue though.
Any suggestions guys and gals? Would be very helpful!
If we go ahead with it I will be sure to get a little thread going
Thanks!

Easy e43 bmw 150bhp 320d touring , room for stuff you can sleep in it , comfy for four adults , 50mpg all day long at high speed , drove from glasgow to exeter and down to the coast as for as I could go , turned around and was near birmingham before I needed to fill up ............ £1600 would bag a tidy 2000/2001 model . Mine had 175k on it and was the best car i have ever owned . I do not know to this day why on earth i sold it !

Two good shouts there^^^^ I'm really liking e46s!! Just after having a 4wd over winter I'm actually scared of not having one now. Sad I know.... Need to man up
To give a idea of what I've been thinking, in my eBay watch list I have: Toyota hilux surf BMW 3series tourings (few 36s and 46s) Volvo v70 Xc Few discoveries and range rovers..... Not sure yet Jeep Cherokee Mitsubishi delica Jag x type Audi a4 avant
Haven't looked at any French alternatives yet, had a few 306s in the past and loved them, defiantly will take a look!
Thanks so far

When I read to title, I was going to suggest a Caterham/ Westfield. A little less involving to drive, would be an BMW E39 530D estate. Don't forget to look out for some Mercs, there are some tidy ones.

hyundai santa fe, 4x4, plenty of space for packing up with stuff, great off road, pretty reliable, not too bad on fuel either, and certainly large enough to sleep in with the seats laid out

You need to take what..? A small tent, for you to sleep in, and a few bits to allow you to keep fresh.
Caterham 1.4/1.6

Boring i know but mondeo estate . Big roomy cheap comfortable . If your going to be munching the miles big time , comfort , fuel economy and ease of ownership are priority . A lot of bang for your buck.

You require an MX5.

I did the same thing, but I used a t4 panel van and converted it into a camper. Avoid e46 320d's, horrible engine - had one for over a year & I hated it. Prone to eating it's own swirl flaps. don't get me wrong e46's are great car's, just not with that engine.

Disocoverys and Range Rovers of this price will eat all of your money and arn't good on fuel at all.
Freelander might be a good call if you went for a 2l diesel.

What about converting the Subaru to LPG with your budget instead of changing vehicles ?

if you're that set on four wheel drive and diesel, I would say Audi A6 2.5 tdi Quattro Avant. Loads of space for everyone + all your stuff, comfy, handle well, great tow cars and not too bad on juice - mid thirties if you're not hanging about and pretty quick for a diesel.
Or, do it the other way, pack light and get an MX5 like MK2VR6 says.

Bit out of the box but surely an old London taxi?? Built for space fuel economy and its cool!! You sir, are a genius. 5 taxis have now been added to the watch list. Stupid question time.... Can you get roof bars and a tow bar for a taxi? Doubt many people have ever considered that before! Interesting review on the 320d joe, bar swirl flaps and oil filter type I've heard good things about them engines. I've done n.wales in an mx5 before and I did love it, however I'm wanting something I can use everyday and I need more than two seats. If I didn't already have a second car, the mx5 is top of the list! LPG on the scoob.... Good idea but I know two boxers with LPG that hate it, one fella I work with has had his in and out of garages and £££££'s spent and its still not running right. I didn't mention that I will be doing this with the lady friend, so "packing light" might require a roof box....... You guys were defiantly the perfect people to ask! All good ideas so far!

I like the Taxi idea. Tint the rear windows and you could turn the back into a small livingroom/bedroom.
