Just picked this up for the wonderful price of nothing... it has a canvas "tool bag" which sits on the rack at the back, its got a sturmy 3 speed hub, that just jumps all over the place and needs more than a fine tune... the front tyre is low... but it made it the 1 mile ride home. No idea what to do with it, maybe clean it up and ride as is, or maybe something crazier... no ideas at the moment.

i was really scared about taking the hub apart, i thought it was going to be like a cuckoo clock flailing parts everywhere. but i used a guide on youtube and its quite simple inside, nothing too scary. theres still amazing parts availability for the old hub internals.

what date is the hub. Bike looks like its 1980s. Make sure the gear cable is smooth. Any kinks or it catching on anything messes up the gear change, as its only a light spring in the hub.

Completely forgot I had started this... well its moved on the smallest amount, managed to adjust the hub so it was ridable and then took it for a 5 mile ride... on return I decided that it needed something different, so its currently been sanded back and awaiting paint. I have a chosen colour and also have a few shiny bits for it ... watch this space

Another update... I just keep forgetting to update, this has now been painted and reassembled, it was waiting on a gear selector cable for sturmy archer, £3 later and a new cable has arrived, just need to fit it, then remember to take some photos and post on here.... most likely be a 3 month wait before any pics... someone remind me

Haha... strangely enough the old ones weren't good enough to go back on, but will be a near future investment/find

I've got an Elswick like that and I enjoy riding it more than I do my mountain bike. With the full guards it's perfect to riding to work whatever the weather. The level of finish on these old bikes is superior to anything new. Mine has spent some time outside whilst I re-build my workshop and the chrome got a little pitted. Ten minutes with some Autosol and it's back to being shiny again.
