OK i've decided to get the ball in motion to move away from this country,as the thought of paying per mile to drive my car and the "nice home tax" that i read about in the paper today has got me down.So i was wondering what motors am i likely to see/drive when i get to the land down under ;D

Just been on ebay austrailia and theres a rover quintet? ?WTF Australia in the 1980’s got a splendidly mad range of rebadged cars and trucks – Nissan Cherry/Pulsar/Sunny became Holden Astra, Patrol was also Ford Maverick, Mazda 323 with different nose became Ford Laser, ditto 626 turned into Ford Telstar, Ford Falcon Ute became a Nissan, etc etc etc.

Some of the home grown 60's/ 70's cars were fantastic.
Check out Ford Falcon & Fairmont, Chrysler Valiant & Charger and Holden Torana, Kingswood, Statesman and Monaro.
There's a thriving enthuiast community for all of the above, and many other models too.
Also many more old Japanese cars, due to a much more metal friendly climate - even 60s ones like Toyo CROWNs.
Oh, and there's plenty of 60/70s Ford Escorts and Cortinas, considerably cheaper than in the UK.

curse word Aussie, come to NZ, and take your pick of ridiculously obscure Japanese used import vehicles If you're going to Aussie, the domestic produced cars are the cheapest to buy... I say get a whopping great XD Ford Falcon!!!

You'll see a bunch of Holden Commodore's and a pile of Ford Falcon's, ranging from 79-07 versions, though most nowdays will be in the 90-07 bracket.
Other than that, Mitsubishi and Toyota are your next largest. Some Commodores were also sold as a Toyota Lexcen.
Aside from those, you'll get a smattering of Datsun, Mazda, Nissan, VW, etc.
Car shows will be riddled with Chargers, Monaro's and the earlier Falcons.
As anothonyg said, a lot more stuff survived thanks mostly to the climate so there's still a fairly large amount of 70's tin around but it is gaining in price quite substancially, although, when you convert from pounds to AUD they're probably all still pretty cheap.
There's even a few C10's over in Aus, GT-R replicas none the less. That'd be a nice welcome to the country present. ;D

Indeed, you have to have owned said vehicle for 'x' amount of time before it's considered able to be bought over as "your car" and not just one you've bought before you left to then sell and make a profit on once you get there. I have heard it can take forever to get the cars through the legal curse word. Also, some states have crazy laws about modifications and you need to get "engineer's reports" and some don't allow modding at all!

If you're thinking Australia is a car modifying paradise, it may be worth having a look at the stack of PDF's linked on the lower half of this page: www.dotars.gov.au/transport/safety/road/bulletin/vsb_ncop.aspxIt's not all bad, it's just that there may be things that you can do without a worry in the UK that are a complete no-no here. PS: I paid AUD$1.07 per litre for 98 Octane unleaded last night.
