Guys, I'm fitting or rather fitted a Pug 205/309 steering rack to my Corsair. However I've hit a bit of an issue. My rack is the splined type( i gather there are two other types flats and square drive), I have the 205 lower joint/column that fits onto the rack, but the UJ is a couple of inches from the end the bit with the splines in being broached into the tube rather than the joint. What I really need is a UJ that fits direct onto the rack, so that my column isn't at such an acute angle as it goes up to hte bulkhead. However search as I may I've not been able to find any charts or close pictures that show what splines Pugs use. Deffo different to the Ford which is finer. Most of the universal ones I've found are imperial sized, the Pug one appears to be metric and coarser splined. So anyone know of a direct fitting UJ to Pug rack please or other Pugs that use a splined UJ. I did find the early PAS 205 use such a joint but even secondhand on the bay are £99 each!!

Cheers for the reply, I had thought of that, but as it would mean almost starting again getting the rack in the right position (ackermann, bump steer etc) and altering all the mounts already on x member I was rather hoping for an easier bolt on solution.
Looking though ebay under other Peugeot's seems a few have a joint right on the rack, but cannot see if they are the same splined drive or not.

To make things a little clearer This is a pic of what I'd like, though not at £99 for a used one poss knacked one!! I'm guessing it uses the same splines as the one below and is from an very early PAS 205. Later ones had square drive not splines apparently. This is a pic of what I've currently got. As you can see UJ under the rubber is about 2 or 3" from rack.

All 205/309 PAS racks are spline fit and, as you've discovered, have a slightly shorter lower column to the non-PAS racks.
It's the 205/309 non-PAS racks that are spline on early models and square on later models.
The 205/309 PAS lower columns were still available new for not too unreasonable money (away from dealers, anyway) not so long back, although I believe they were all the non-GTi type that has a rubber insert rather than the GTi solid one - nothing that can't be welded though.

Ah ha Cheers for that vital info. That helps very much. Thank you.
I've just spent the day on and off emailing a car parts seller on ebay who has those PAS columns new for a more reasonable £69. I was just trying to establish if it had splines in the UJ and getting nowhere fast, as all they kept asking for was the reg number!!!

K425 MNJ is a 309 Goodwood which had PAS as standard, so try that if they're being a pain. If they can reference it against an OE part number, it should be 410398 or 410394. The later is still available from Peugeot, but it's a frankly horrific £176.90 inc VAT Be warned that some later PSA cars (eg ZX/306/Xsara) have a similar looking lower column, but it's too long compared to the 205/309 item and most of them are square drive as well.

Thanks for that and you have confirmed my suspicions that most of the later Pug racks(except those mentioned) are probably not splined. The length isn't an issue as I'll be welding a English splined shaft on the other end to match up with my column, it was having the UJ as close to the rack as poss I needed. I do have to ask why are Pug columns so expensive anyway?? lol
In hindsight, as Welshpug suggests, it would have been easier to rotate the rack whilst building the x member. But I really can be faced with setting all that up again. Thanks again everyone.
