Apologies for boring daily question!
I've got a mk3 golf, non turdblow diesel, the starter motor solenoid had just started sticking leaving the motor spinning it's head off until I wallop it with a hammer.
I've also got a starter motor off a mk3 golf 8v Gti I engine raped a while ago - It looks like it'll physically fit the required orifice, but the actual motor end is about 10mm narrower and the casting is slightly different meaning the solenoids probably won't swap over.
I know it might be a bit lazy in turning the engine over if it does fit, but will it engage the flywheel? I think I recall someone mentioning something about the pitch of the teeth on petrol/diesel flywheels being different, I don't want to fit it and end up taking chunks out of my ring gear.
Anyone?

Not really sure to be honest, but I've got a B3 Passat diesel solidmass flywheel and a B5 petrol dual mass both lying around I can have a look at sometime if that's any use? They're different diameters, but I think that the ring-gear's the same diameter, so may be comparable.

I'm pretty sure I've got a starter kicking around from an SDi caddy I broke ages back.
If you're stuck, drop me a pm - it's yours for whatever it costs to post.

it depends on the year of the diesel. sometime in '95 no idea when, not at the same time they changed anything else either so there no easy way to spot it) they 'upgraded' the derv starter to a 10t pinion with self supporting bearing. prior to that, they had the same 9t spigoted one as everything else. the 10t derv starter is unique to the 1.9d/td models, and hard or expensive (or both) to get. GSF wanted twice as much for the 10t one as the more common 9t one. iirc its something like 2kw as opposed to 1.8. the only real way to tell externally is to remove the undertray (if its still got one on) and look up from underneath- the 9t one has an extra unused mounting tab next to the front mounting hole. the 10t doesnt have it. and yes, i know all of this from cold hard experience

^ I was about to say the same thing, I've fitted a 2.0 petrol starter to a 1.6 diesel with no issues - I used the suck it and see approach and it's always worked for me. Although I did work in scrap yard at the time so it didn't cost me anything. The 2.0 was a early Mk3 though so maybe that was it, as Dez says.

Thanks for the replies team, both cars are 1996 reg so it seems I'm outta luck as regards just swapping one over.
Looks like I'll see about doing a bit of a refurb on the existing starter before I melt it into a solid blob of copper by not noticing it's still spinning it's head off, and when that fails about a week later (because squirting brake cleaner all into the solenoid bit isn't actually a refurb) I'll probably have to go grovelling to Joe76 in the hope that his starter fits.

Just been and dug it out, after seeing Dez's reply. Mines the 9 tooth one, with the extra bolt hole, so may be the wrong one - but like I said, it's yours if you want it. It's this one in fact... Joe
