Quite a few of us on here into this, specially local lads to me who I had no idea were into it! Anyway. Used to have a oo layout that me and my dad built (I'll scan some photos soon) but that was dismantled and sold a long time ago. Fast forward many years, I find myself on a weekend break in Sidmouth with Mrs Rich. Anyone who's been there may or may not know about the awesome Sidmouth Antiques centre, one dealer who trades from there specialises in tin-plate O gauge. I had to have me some of that. It captures everything I ever loved about model trains as a toy. robust, chunky, noisy and clockwork. I started to build up a small collection of rolling stock and locos and ended up here. Will get more shots of them if anyone is interested? Anyway. I hardly used them. Fear of breaking the 40+ year old clockwork and the sheer size of the locomotives and thus track made them somewhat of an ornament. A lovely ornament, but an ornament nonetheless. I do still run them periodically, but not as much I was hoping. That's where Jonovlov stepped in. He has N gauge. I then decided to have N gauge, because in the space I have, I can have a simple layout that equates to about a scale kilometre of track. So here we go with that! Starting to take shape.. This is the first loco I bought, GWR Hall class 6960,'raveningham hall' It ran for a few minutes before it burned out. Great stuff, Farish! Cue new brushes. Tiny loco rebuild. All back together and running on the bench.. Picked up a few more odds and ends. Recovery crane and a loco Diabolu posted me: BR pannier.. Jon also weathered these wagons a bit for me. Need to practice this myself.. At this point, Speedy88 joined in the fun and bought a few N gauge locos too. Its catching! Sadly, one didn't really run. So cue surgery.. Not sure if we ever did get that one running right. But did get a nice shot of it running.. He also bought a fantastic runner, but it was modified and tatty. So we did a bit of paint and tidying up. Also running: Diabolu recently brought me a load of buildings recently too, so will get some more pics soon!

I think this summer we need to have an Area 52 train day, convoy to one of the local railways or something. Will stick some photos of my 00 setup (bought not built, well, not by me anyway) up in a bit...

In 1980 my wife gave me a choice for Xmas present - N gauge railway set or a Polistil raceway (Matchbox sized cars). I choose the raceway, which I've still got 33 years later, but still wished I'd bought myself the n gauge set up. I have got a Mamod SL1 steam train and track though Paul h

Do you crash them together on purpose? My grandad had a huge track layout when I was a kid, N gauge-ish size by the looks. All me and my brother used to do is chase each others trains round then see if we could knock each other off.

My dad built me a nice 00 set in the roof of his garage when I was a kid, it had something like 20 sets of points controlled from a bank of switches and a hidden storage yard that you could see into by some reflecting mirrors. We've still got it but there was a small fire about 15years ago and although it avoided it, it got grubby from the smoke. He built a frame over the top of it and chipboarded it and uses it for car panel storage. If I have kids of my own I'd like to restore it.
He bought the lot cheap from a neighbour of my grandparents who died back in the 80's. I remember we bought a intercity 125 for it and it came with a lot of old engines, duchess of hamilton and mallard spring to mind. We had a lot of pullman carriages as well from memory.

I would, if the locomotives were actually cheap and plentiful it's at least £45 and upwards for something like the hall class. Crazy for a cheap nasty open 3 pole motor and a whitemetal body with wheels but eh, could be spending it on worse things..

Massive rail fan here, love all what's been posted so far!
I recently joined the Avon Valley and Great Central Railways, planning to volunteer a bit on the AVR soon. Did a couple of days on the harbour railway a few years ago too which were great.
Used to have big N gauge and 00 layouts (The perks of having divorced parents meant I could have two setups), all in storage now but will get it out again some day.

This what is in my spare room, just this one board at the moment which is 4' x 18". It's from a layout that I helped exhibit a few times and when the owner/builder retired it, he asked me if I wanted it, which I jumped at! It's based on the electrified Southern Region in South London, and everything you can see except the track, vehicles and figures was scratchbuilt from thin wood and card.

Great stuff. It's been at least 5 years since I had a working layout, can't wait to have the space again. Nowhere near the level of detail of some of the above though

A re-post of my floor layout in 00. Was in a large C around the room. Got replaced with a developing ON30. Here is the shay type loco. I'll have to get some better (non phone) shots. The plan for this is for it to go into the garden. Like the idea of a railway day.

Some mega cool stuff in this thread, i have OO stuff! Mostly new or nearly new that's had very little use! Some moneys worth too! Sadly no room to set it up. HOWEVER i'm currently in the process of buying our first house, that will give me room to set up, aswell as my scalextric!

Very nice stuff.
I have recently inherited a massive load of HO/OO scale stuff. My grandfather built a layout for my dad and uncle, and it expanded over the years to eventually take up the whole loft space of his pretty large house. When I was a teenager I was right into it, expanded the layout and started upgrading the electrics. There is a massive load of locos, from old Triang and Hornby stuff up to modern stuff by Bachmann and Kato. In later years my grandfather took a fancy to USA diesel locos so there is a lod of them and God-knows how much rolling stock. When he died, the house was sold so the layout was taken apart and stored. All the rolling stock, most of the track, points etc and all point motors, signals etc are in dozens of boxes stored at my dads house. I have the space here to build a decent layout so just need to get it all over here.

My Dad's a bit of a model train buff. His 00 guage layout finally loops the loft after 50 odd years of collecting parts and building points. This has been posted before but dosnt hurt to post again; There is also a 37 with the sound chip fitted; More recently he has been building loco's in 0 guage for other people, this was the last one he completed; This is the valve gear from the above loco during running in; Dave

I had an OO layout when I was a kid, I've still got all the stuff and I've been buying up track when I see it at the right price, just in case I have space at some point to build something again. It's disturbing to see how much rolling stock is new - £40-odd quid for a coach (RRP) last time I was in a model shop. I like the idea of N gauge, but would have to start from scratch.
