I was under the impression that they're relatively bombproof, being a Honda'n'all. Maybe mooch round some owners forums and see what crops up?

Yeah I've always been told they're pretty bombproof, especially in standard tune.

I don't know much about the K series engine, but a friend of mine had a B series engine that only had 6k miles on it. He drove it like a baby until I drove it from Charleston, SC to Atlanta, GA and it overheated. Granted I drive the speed limit in excess but owning an 8v Scirocco 1.6 engine, I didn't think it'd be a problem.
Now I know a B series and K series is different and I'm not a big Honda guy but in regards to "bombproof" it really depends on the previous driver(s).

I too have been led to believe that they're pretty bomb-proof. Going by the power that people have squeezed out of them they are immensely strong. I know strong isn't always the same as reliable but 500bhp+ turbo-charged examples leads me to believe it's not going to fall apart too soon. I did a bit of work experience at a Honda specialist ( www.tgmsport.co.uk/ ) back when I was at college and the only one we had in in that month was one that a friend of one of the mechanics had crashed through a street light... I know that doesn't necessarily mean much but they weren't queueing up to be repaired.

Don't some Honda engines rotate the wrong way (compared to most cars)? Which make it difficult to use a non Honda axle?

F series rotates nrmally - it's some of the front-mounted stuff (the ones with the crank pulley/belts on the LH side of the car) which rotate the wrong way.

the 09 engines had problems with knocking at very low milage and the very first engines had to have different oil jets fitted to cool the pistons under a recall. the 03 engine will be fine other than high milage can have chain and guide wear. the timing chain on these engines are tiny. i don't think there is anyone in the UK that can rebuild these engines. some have tried and failed. problem is they have a fibre reinforced ally block which need special way to bore and hone and the pistons are coated. there are companies in America that will liner the block for a more standard type piston but usually if there is a problem it's cheaper to throw it away and buy another secondhand one. they do use oil so need regular checking and plenty of oil changes if driven hard. my S2000 did 8 miles to the gallon on trackdays. the engine in the S800 is a dummy one i bought cheap just to make everything fit. plan is to buy a complete S2000 when an engine is required and break it. most unused bits will sell on the S2000 forum ps i'm in Bexhill as well
