'92 SPi, had new sensors and thermostat , doesn't run hot, i've bled the heater, no mayo, no sign of a water leak visible, no leaking hoses or defective rad. it runs fine for a 140k lump....
but it spits water out the header bottle on a regular basis, maybe twice a week it'll lose a litre, any ideas ?

Are you somewhat sociable with an MOT tester? Whip the header cap off and get them to sniff the header tank with the gas analyzer, if it registers appreciably more hydrocarbons than fresh air the HG is likely on the way out (combustion gases in the water)
How confident are you that the cap is OK? they aren't renowned for being brilliant, and I don't think replacements are expensive.

Yes i had the old impeller breaking off the pump scenario on my misses beetle. Got no temp gauge but every now and then it would set the overheat buzzer off and spit all the water out the header. Started maybe ince a week or so. In the end it was pretty regular. So i did a hydrocarbon test. No gasses. Got the pump out and it was spinning. Just impelled every 3 turns or so.

have u tried changing the header tank cap, they can cause varying issues if they arnt working properly.
ive known a few people change head gaskets on vw's only find it was just a dodgy cap.

I'd try the cap first - this is something that they do. Had similar with my Audi. The cheap pattern caps sometimes do it from new too.....
The Audi would spit water out to the point where the header tank was about 1.4 full when cold and hold at that point. New cap sorted it (well the second, VAG one did)

if it still has a black cap try fitting one of the revised ones which are blue. high miles doesnt always mean the head gasket is on its way out. my g40 has covered 170k without any head gasket replacements
