Unfortunately 90% of them look just like that up till the moment they snap...If you don't know when it was last done get it changed ASAP

Thanks fellas
Just been out and had another look there is no fraying and the belt looks fine underneath no cracking whatsoever. You can also still see writing on the belt. I think I'm going to risk it for a bit or until I can find the spons. Sorry if that comes across as if I am asking for advice then ignoring it.

Hi, I'd agree with the above and say change it (plus tensioner) straight away if you don't know when it was last done. The reason I say this is that my wife had a Lupo 1.4 16v with a similar engine, it threw the belt off due to a failing tensioner... sounded like a chainsaw when she arrived home, and cost me £300 in parts and a few weekends to fix! I recall having to get a VAGCOM laptop to reset the various sensors and all kinds of mither on top of head gaskets, lapping new valves in blah blah... I still have a few of it's bent valves in the garage as a reminder to always change belts in good time!  Cheers Stu |

Well I got a quote of £250+ VAT to do both belts, tensioners & waterpump which isnt bad but its virtually half the cars value. So if like me you didnt know if the cambelt needed changing would you just leave it and if it went bang just sell the car off as a non runner?
What would you do ?

If the belt pops then you're looking at serious valve/piston damage and it may well be cheaper/easier to just drop an engine in out of a crashed one (I presume these are interference engines, but someone more knowledgeable can confirm).
Get the bits and do it yourself, if you take your time and get a few people to help it's a very rewarding experience.

Get it done asap & make sure the waterpump is done at the same time. My old one went & took 15 valves & cost £900 to get it sorted...luckily before I bought it. One car I wish I kept, such a rev happy machine.

Did VW not severely reduce the mileage they recommended on this model of engine? IIRC they are not too tricky to change  . OK you could let it go bang, but I guess the car would not be worth much more than weigh in value, and then you would have the trouble of finding another car, which may need its belt doing (they seem to IME with cheap cars). FWIW, a specialist local to me quote £220 to change the belts and tensioners for OE bits, £260 using genuine parts, and another £30 for a water pump. That was on a 1.4 16v Lupo . |
